vtec question
ok i was conversating with my friend today and he was telling me that vtec is worthless on a car and not good for racing. this guy isnt really a honda fan so he's probaly bullshiting. n e way i thought it was good for racing. when ur engine needs more air at higher rpms (this is sohc) it helps a lot. so i just wanna know if he's just talkin outta his *** or is vtec really bad thing when racing??

Well, depends...
if you are referring to the HX motor, then that is for economy purposes.
If you referring to the normal old school VTEC like in GS-R's, H22's, etc...
then your friend is a tool and needs to learn of what he is talking about before blabbering.
VTEC is kinda like having a stock motor, and a V8 agressive *** cam.
When you hear those old school muscle V8's overlapping (having that "blub blub blub blub" idle), that is what the VTEC cam lobe is. At higher RPM's, it switches to that larger cam lobe and results in higher HP numbers after the primary cam lobes have expired (which are there for low end torque and fuel economy).
Once again, tell your buddy to learn what he is talking about before blabbering his mouth..

well put. my hx has 2 lobes on the cam. i know its weak. also fuel economy and power cannot be put in the same sentence.

Fuel economy and power CAN be put in the same sentance, it just doesn't make much of one or the other.

VTEC is really only necessary for everyday driving, because you want the low-RPM torque and high RPM horsepower...if you have a race motor, you will hardly spend any time in the low-RPM range...so it really isnt necessary...you just get one big monster cam with lots of power up top.
if you put an ex head on it you wont have roller rockers <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by MrIllegalX »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">In defense of HXs....
We have roller rockers! We can have bigger cam lobe profiles than you!! Our VTEC does suck though, nothing an EX head can't fix. </TD></TR></TABLE>
