Default sohc: vtec versus non-vtec

i have a 97 cx, with the cheese motor d16y7. i have seen some cheap *** swaps around and was wondering how much of a difference i would feel in performance. and also, to anyone who has swapped a vtec engine, just how hard is the wiring? i keep thinkin about this swap, but the wiring part scares me away. thanks.

p.s.-i did a search

if you are going to stick with SOHC then you won't feel a monster gain by swapping in the VTEC SOHC engine. You will def. gain some mid to high range power, but it won't be THAT big of a difference.

If you want MAJOR gains, then swap in a B16 or B18C1 or B18C5 or LS/Vtec or B20/Vtec.. Basically do some research and find out which would suit your needs the most.

As for the wiring. You might want to find out if your car is already wired for vtec.. I'm not sure which EK's are and are not. Either way wiring for Vtec is not that hard to do. Just do some research on that and you'll see what I mean. Once you get over your fear of wiring it will be a lot easier to do.

Im boosting a y7 and like it. I did'nt care to switch over to VTEC, as there is more room to run a more radical cam without vtec y0!!

i recommend putting on a vtec head and boostin that thing b/c it will be cheaper. its alot less expensive; and easier to rebuild a head vs. a block which involves engine removal. u could find a vtec head and tranny for like 300 bucks probly. i got my whole y7 swap for 300 and put my vtec head and tranny on it and i love it. (minus my current dilemma)

How would just a B18B swap be? Its cheaper than say swappin in a B18C, and your gettin a decent power upgrade over the SOHC motor. And then you can always turbo it, which the B18B is a great platform for. What do you guys think of that? And I mean, i know that the B18B in a LS Teg' can perform just as well stock for stock as a B16 in a Civic Si. So in our Hatch's & Del Sol's it should be about the same or a little better because of the weight. How does this sound?

From personnal experience,

Best time with a non-vtec engine 16.6 for the 1/4.
Best time with the vtec engine in 15.6 for the 1/4. That was with the same mods, only difference was the engine and tranny.

I would swap the tranny also, gearing is made for vtec with the si tranny.

I would do so, try to buy a semi-built vtec head, and an si tranny, your set.

Dont even bother dude. I got the del Sol S with the cheese D15 motor and its a monster. For some reason its not as slow as other D15's I drove. I beat alot of cars off the bottle. LS's and Civic EX's daily.... with the same mods as me.

Did you mean ur swapping the same motor that i have in my del??? Its the si but im not exactly sure the code name. Something like D16y7. If i do my gsr swap, ill trade you the motor and tranny for something else. If you want to do that, tell greg and he'll relay the message.

he is right. Your long geared tranny is holding you back.

dependant on what exactly u want to do there are quite a few things u can do to the y7. i have a 99 hatch with the y7 i already swapped the tranny for an si tranny (92-95si not 99-00) that makes a def increase in performance, more so than the typical bolt ons i/h/e. if u just want something a lil more fun to drive just get the tranny and i'd swap the intake manifold for the y8's since u can get them cheap now those mods along with the usual bolt-ons will make for a much more fun car to drive, not the fastest thing but still fun.

its not too bad to do a tranny swap. if u are at all mechanically inclined u should be able to tackle the job. do a search for a how to change an axle that was just posted recently. u have to do that 1st and than u can pull the tranny, i'm pretty sure there were a couple of posts on the tranny subject as well.
