Default Is it the driver, or the car? (EP)

I have been driving standard transmission equipped cars almost all my life, anything from my Honda Civic up to an 03 Porsche 911 Turbo (not owning one, but did drive it). I have never had a problem shifting quickly until I owned my 03 Civic Si.

My Si has just under 10000 miles now and just recently have I been doing spirited driving (of course on an open highway in the middle of no where, with no traffic to be seen). Everytime I take off quickly and shift quickly, I almost ALWAYS grind 2nd gear. Remember, I have never really driven my car like this UPTIL now.

What is this? Is it driver error or do you EP owners experience the same thing?

Sometimes happens to me too, I need to take it in sometime to get it checked. It doesn't do it as much whenever I pull a little harder to the left while I'm shifting into second.

Maybe its because of the new cable operated shifter? I don't know, they feel like butter to me.

I never had a problem shifting quickly until the car I have now. 2000 b18c1 with 25k miles has a third gear grind!

Makes me want to see who the previous owner was, and beat their *** for missing third too much or something!

There's been several (nay, even tens/hunderds?) of people reporting this on
ephatch. Some guys get it fixed - sometimes they say it's just that the cables
need tightening or a tranny fluid replacement helped - others don't get any luck
with their dealer (i.e. they don't do anything about it).
I'd take it in to have them check it out.
I've noticed that you have to be sure to shift properly, since it's on the dash - i.e.
I was getting some grinding/notchiness going from 2nd to 3rd until I realized I
needed to shift up, then over and not try to short cut it.

two things:

at 10 miles, your gear box is still pretty tight, so slamming gears will result in a higher probablilty of misshifts & grinding.

2nd gear is longer than all the other gears, so it requires a slower shift otherwise you will grind. If you chang up your timing just a little bit, you'll be fine.

It started happening to me too the past 2 weeks and I thought something was wrong. But what I didnt understand was that it shifted fine when I shift normally but would grind when I shifted fast so I tried a couple things out. I tried shifting fast but I made sure my foot was on the clutch all the way before I completely shifted because I figured it was probably my arm and foot coordination and damn it I was right. If your second gear is fucked up, no matter how you shift its fucked up but if it only grinds when you shift fast, chances are you're experiencing the same problem.

But trying to get more info on that myself..Glad to see other people are experiencing the same problems and it isn't just me!! But mad it's happening..Blech..

Sounds more like driver error, than car related. If you overzealously shift it too hard you can run problem with it not wanting to go into gear, if you do not coordinate you hand foot modulation you will grind. My brothers EP3 just sucks it into gear, just smooth controlled fast shifts.

uh its been happing to me for the past well.....em 20 thousand miles! I have 25,000 right know. Took it to the dealer twice got b/s for it too, it happins to me while just cruzing down the road.....alll in all its the synchros that arent up to the task of handaling spirited driving. Hell my brothers RSX type-S is jumping itself out of third gear and grinding 2, and 3rd gear! Oh and also, they didnt recall it, but a service bulletin was issued on the freaking s2000 tranny! Sounds like hondas parts supplier sucks making quality synchronizers!

I'm a total newb to driving stick. I pretty much learned on my EP3. I have about 22k miles on it now and have never made anything grind when shifting fast.

You aren't giving the syncros enough time to work.

mine used to be really really crunchy going into 2nd...

then i figured that i kept forcing it into gear and now i just let it "fall" into gear. clicks right in, no struggle at all. kinda like when u shift in those arcades like in daytona or something.....never grinds or crunch ever... . unless i get all exciting a force it in gear again.

after i figured this out, i noticed my revs matches exactly when it clicks right in, so maybe watch for that?

who knows, could be just my tranny tho
