Default Dedicated HPDE car

I want to sell my prelude and buy a dedicated HPDE car. The prelude is not paid off yet and I couldnt really afford to total it at a track event.

I am thinking about buying an EG hatch because they are very lightweight and are relatively inexpensive. I think that I will one day race but I do not think it will be for quite a while. So for now I am just going to focus on it being an HPDE car that wont hurt me financially if I total it rather than a future race car.

The problem is I dont know what the differences between the trims (ie CX, VX, Si, etc) to make an educated decision. I already know which motor (and coresponding power) comes with which trim and what the vehicle weights are. Can anyone enlighten me as to what other performance advantages the Si has over the CX and VX (like brakes, ABS, etc) other than power. I'm trying to weight performance vs. price. And the capability of a motor swap is always in the back of my mind in the event that it does not eventually become a dedicated race car.

PS I tried posting this in the EG forum first and it got buried to the third page in a couple of hours with no replies. TIA

I sold my prelude to buy an EG for the track as well.

In stock form, the CX/DX/VX have equal brakes, but still very sufficient at stock power levels (with good pads). The Si has better brakes all around.

If you're going to run the car with the stock engine, I wouldn't buy the CX. I never tried it on track, but I did drive a stock one back and forth to work for a year. The DX or VX will give you enough power to learn and have fun with. Of course, the Si will as well...

From there, you have to look at the future of each model. What class could you race them in in stock form... what advantages would each have if you were to do a swap...

A hatch is definitely a fun HPDE car, but there are better options if you wanted something that would transition into a racecar (in stock form).

From what I've seen... and if I could fit in one... I'd buy a cheap miata over a hatch.

All came with the same 9.5in front brakes but the CX and DX used drums in the rear, the SI had disk brakes. There are a few of the SI's with ABS floating around and they came with larger 10.5in front brakes, but good luck finding one.

The SI came with a front sway bar, 22mm I think. No 92-95 civics with exception for the EX 4door came with a rear sway bar.

A couple months back, my boy Jared wrote an article on the subject. "A buyer's guide to the EG hatches" in Sports Compact Car.

Buyers Guide to EG Hatches

My suggestion is to either get the SI model and run the SOHC engine. Or if you're definitely doing a swap, then get the lower VX model so you don't have a sunroof, and better chassis structure and don't have to worry about VTEC wiring as it was the only one that had it other than the SI.
