d16y8 Turbo
I currently have skunk2 headers, skunk2 stage 2 cams, ame cai in my d16y8. I'm looking to add turbo but havent been able to find a kit for it. Do i have to make my own, or does someone make a kit for this engine?
there are plenty of kits for the y8.
greddy 96-00 kit (don't have to use the 92-95 kit anymore)
edelbrock 96-00EX kit
revhard
apexi 92-95 kit (don't think that is available anymore)
drag
edelbrock is by far the best kit available. greddy would also be a good choice.

I just read about the Edlebrock kit in the new SCC. It seems that on thier first try, the wastegate stuck shut and they ran it up to 20psi and blew the motor on the first go at it. I would be weary of a 3500 dollar kit with problems like this.
On the other hand, I like my Greddy kti very much. Of course you have to add an IC and a BOV among other things, but it just gives you room to get what you like.

Not a good idea if he is asking if anyone even makes a kit for the car. I would'nt recommend a custom setup to anyone who has'nt done a turbo setup before.

whoa good point didn't read all of his post... i'm just biased towards custom setups anwyay hehe
and... with that said... do lots of research before u jump into the FI world. learn how turbo systems work, etc and such. it will be helpful in the future

edelbrock makes a turbo for the d16y8, I was thinking of getting it but im not sure if it has been placed in there catalog yet, if not it should be coming out soon but it's kinda pricey $3,500 and says it will give you 175 whp, not much more than the b series though. The kit comes with everything though, turbo, intercooler, blowoff valve, and all the hardware to do the install yourself.. check it out http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/index.html

The part that failed was the wastegate actuator(made by Garrett)....the crimp was bad so the wastegate didn't open. It was a stupid mistake that they ran the car without installing the boost gauge, that little gauge would have saved the motor. From what I hear, they all get checked for it now before leaving Edelbrock to ensure they don't get crap actuators from Garrett, or at least that the customer doesn't get the crap ones!

Edelbrock Turbo setup is trash IMO. they need to do more researching before they put this kit on the market. I've seen 2 cars up here with the kit and both run crappy as hell. one was at a well known tuning shop up here (Elite) and the other was one of my friends' cousins who had it. both bogged and ran like **** even after trying to tune them.
Greddy, Apexi, fmax or maxrev get my vote

I would as long as they have done their research (which doesn't apply here since he doesn't even know what kits are made for the D series), but I think a first time turbo setup could be custom. Mine will be.

Best of luck with that. I know I sure could'nt handle it. I bougt a secondhand kit the first time around and did'nt manage to get that thing on my car. And yes, that Corky Bell book is a GREAT read!!

So that was YOUR car marauder?? How are you liking it so far?? Does'nt feel quite as fast as 20psi though right?

The white car in the install was NOT my car. The underhood pic at the begining and the "Edelbrock Civic" two page feature after the install article was my car.
I have heard of the "bogging" issues with some cars. They all involve the 96-98 models and the MAP sensor. Edelbrock uses a diode that gets wired in to hold the voltage at a certain limit to prevent the MAP from throwing a CEL. Some cars don't seem to have a problem with it, and others do. A missing link seems to make it go away. I know two other people besides myself with the kit. The 99-00 civics don't need a MAP sensor fix, the ECU can handle 7psi of boost without throwing a CEL. Edelbrock is working hard on making up a better fix than it is currently using.
My personal experience....the kit bolted right up. We broke it in and threw it on the dyno, and first pull made 175 whp! I have put 17,500 miles on the kit since I have been daily driving it since May. I have only changed the oil and filter, and a set of plugs since the MSD ignition fried them. Running stock ignition at the moment. The car is such a different animal at 7psi, but I am hungry for more. I will be putting a manual boost valve on and going to 9psi daily soon. Its nice to just roll on the gas in 5th gear to go up hills! I had a blast driving the car on a cayon road (the one that is the sunset pic in SCC mag) but I found out I need to learn to drive my car better. That was the first time I drove the car hard since I had it, with all the magazine articles it was used for.
