Intresting... I have a D15B in my DX coupe...
Very intresting... I was bullshitting with my friend who has a stock DX hatch that I was gonna race him in my stock DX coupe (joking, not serious!) and I said to him, "ya know this doesn't feel like a normal DX engine" Sure enough, I open the hood, clean off the block and what numbers are staring at me, D15B. So I search honda-tech, and what do ya know, JDM D15B SOHC VTEC engine.
I got the car off my aunt for practically pennies (https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=640777). I know she had the engine replaced, I don't know if its still running on the DX ECU (sorry I don't know D15 engine codes and all that), but I'm pretty sure its still on the DX tranny. Anyway I can find out what ECU I'm running? And this also means I can use a VTEC controller and such. How do these motors hold up to turbo?

You certain it's simple a D15B? That's not a USDM motor, don't see how your grandmother would get her hands on it without knowing it. I'm gonna go out on a limb and bet that it's a D15B7.

D15B2 Honda Civic DX/LX, CRX DX 1988-1991

D15B7 Honda Civic DX/LX 1992-1995
D15B8 Honda Civic CX 1992-1995

After looking a bit more, I could just be an idiot (see below), and not read everything right... I'm going to check again. whats strange to me is the japanese writing on the pully cover... I don't know 100% on everything honda yet... I'm more subaru
OK after looking at it again... the stamp D15B and then like 131.. something something under the D15B... and since I looked again, the valve cover well for one, doesn't say VTEC on it.
So if thats the case, I don't know WHAT kind of motor is in this thing. Like I said, my aunt had it replaced when she blew it up and the guy told her it was a japanese civic motor, so whatever...-

How to tell the difference...
non-vtec D15Bx's have the spark plug wires in the back...the valve covers look like this:
the d16z6/jdm d15b has a valve cover like this (there is another valve cover with H Honda on it), but they have the plug wires in the front. Also, the Z6's have the VTEC solenoid to the upper left of the valve cover:
Of course...there are other things, like the D15Z1 VX has the VTEC solenoid and plug wires in front for VTEC-E, and all of the 96-00 D-series engines have plug wires in the front. Basically, if your plug wires are in the back, and you don't have a VTEC solenoid...you got a plain ol d15.

OT: so the only difference between the jdm d15b's is the vtec and vtec-e, correct?
you would tell the difference with
-vtec solenoid on top = vtec
-vtec solenoid on bottom = vtec-e
correct?

Sometimes shops get the engine from a local importer (like my shop does) and if the importer and shop did not realize the mess up, a D15B VTEC could have landed in there.
We had a 45 year old lady who was the original owner of a 1993 Accord come through our shop with a DOHC non-VTEC JDM Accord engine in it. I believe it was an F22B or something. Much like the H23A non-VTEC engine.
She had no clue it wasn't supposed to be in there. She had some shop in Jersey replace the engine, and they charged her for a stock F22A Accord engine.
Also sometimes importers know what they have, but if they don't have the stock engine that's needed they'll go with the next best thing (even if it's better) for the same price so as not to lose a sale.
Also I'm not 100% on this, but if the D15B ever came with a valvecover like on the 1992-1993 D16Z6 then it won't say VTEc on it, but again the plug wires will be on the frontside of the cover.

This is the valve cover we are speaking of...the one that doesnt have VTEC on it...notice the plug wires are in the front and the solenoid is to the left

2 of my friends have d15b's in there EJ's. One got it after he blew his engine. he payed for a Z6 and got a JDM d15b. and my other friend just got his EJ for 3500, with a JDM D15b. They had the spark plug sticker in japanese. One of them has the VTEC valve cover. and the other one just says HONDA on it. just like in the pics.
