Default Under drive Pulleys

Does a Light weight underdrive pulley actually make a difference that is worth it?
Thanks

it takes stress off your motor and frees up some hp (not sure how much) but ive heard both sides. some say they do. some say they dont

I have the Ultra R crank pulley and Ultra A alt. pulley. Best investment ever. 33,000miles and counting.

Just FYI I have heard that lighter underdrive pulley's throw off the harmonic balance of the engine.

Don't bother with the pulley's. They under power your accesories. And the crank pulley has a very good chance of damaging your engine.

If you want more power. Remove your power steering and A/C. Leave the alternator and crank pullies alone.

NOTE: 100% of all good professional Honda engine builders use the stock crank pullies.

The alt pulley is fine, and a good cheap upgrade for throttle response. I would advise against the crank pulley- even AEM's own website gives a warning about the crank pullies.

For other cars, I 've heard the pulley make a difference and is suggested (DSM's, BMW) But people I spoke to about u.p. for Honda's, they say it's a bad idea.

Yeah yeah yeah and there are little gobblins that come out of the pullies at night and ruin your oil pump gear and bearings blah blah blah.

Talk to Steven Sakai, (SGT) for more info about UR pullies.

I was waiting for this debate to happen. Every time without fail.

Just from what I've read and word of mouth I'd rather just do what Spade said and take out the AC/power steering. As for the "throwing off the harmonic balance", I've never heard anything about that. My $.02 = stick with stock

i love my UR crank pulley. better throttle response and less rotaional mass.

its the exact same idea as having a lightened flywheel. LESS INERTIA!

i guess lightened flywheels are a bad idea too

and dont give that harmonic balance bull. the stock crank pulley on a B or D seris motor does very little if any harmonic balancing of the crank. thats why the rotating assembly is balanced from the factory.

What about for people running stereo's? I was thinking about getting my gf a set of the AEM's but I worry about what kind of potential damage it can do to her car. It's not like she's running a huge show system or anything. She runs a premier deck, Alpine speaker, 2 JL 12's, a Zapco amp and a eclipse amp. And we have a Optima yellow top battery. I have also heard both sides and still haven't been able to decide. I just don't know if the benefits are really worth it.

AEM's website (www.aempower.com)

"Virtually all of the cars we make Tru-Power pulleys for come equipped with a vibration dampener mounted to the crank from the factory. Aftermarket crank pulleys require the removal of these dampeners, which are required for engine life. Their removal can cause damage to your engine over time. If the manufacturers could save on vehicle costs by eliminating this device they would have done so."

First of all if you keep the PS and Alt. you are going to lose rpm on them so your PS will be sluggish and your lights will dim badly at idle. So the best bet would be to just remove the PS and AC. Also, according to UR, there have been no blown, or damaged engines caused by the underdrive pulleys. Of course this is and has always been debated. Another little tidbit to consider is that the CTR pulley is not a dampener and it is an OEM part. Actually the Mitsubishi and Dodge motors are the only ones that need to be rebalanced after adding a crank pulley because they DO have a harmonic dampener. As for me, I wasn't sure either way. I had read my share of horror stories and decided to sell my UR set without ever installing them. I didn't think the netted 3 whp was worth the risk. my .02

I Had a UR SS on my SOHC and i loved them. Rev'd up quicker and gained a few ponies. Also If you ditch the P/S and A/C thats dyno proven 8 HP according to the honda horsepower books.

yeah I'm thinking of ditching my ac belt for the winter and getting an alternator pulley to help out a bit.........not sure about the alty pulley though.......any opinions on that?? My crank p ulley freeed up alot of midrange power due to the faster reving......but will I gain power with the alty pulley or just help it spin better so it charges the battery??

i wouldnt bother with the alt pulley. the crank is the only one i think is worth it.

and to whoever said your lights will be very dim at idle, ive had UR crank pullies on two different engines and neither had dim lights at idle. maybee other brands are known for it, but i never had any problem with UR.

I have the AEM alt pulley on my EF & have had it on for over a year. I immediatly noticed better throttle response. My lights & CD player do dim at idle slightly, but nothing to worry about. IMO the $60 I spent on the pulley was worth it.

Same hear...

I don't have a comment on as far is if they are good or bad. I would just save the $ for something more worthwhile. Do watchyalike though.

yeah mine don't dim but if I leave my radio on or parkin lights my bat does "die" alot faster and the batt is fairly new, and this didn't start happening till after the pulley i nstall............so I guess you just have to be more carefull.....
