finishing up i/h/e
ok ive had the intake and its time to finish the beginners mod. now the first thing that comes to my mind with headers is dc sport of course. but i remember reading one time that on 4 bangers the dc sports is just a waste of money. is that true. i want to get the right combination i guess between headers and exhuast. i want to get an exhuast that isnt all ricey and annoying. i want deep i guess. as close as i can to a powerful sound. lol. any suggestions on what my setup should be.
I/H/E is really just a polishing thing, it doesn't really make that much power as you know, but it is a nice little combo to make a stock car a little more fun to drive among other things.
Anyhow, a DC header (headers = v6, v8), is a great investment as it is a very high quality piece of work. Not only that, but it is CARB legal unlike a lot of generic headers. In most cases, just a good low end torque gain can be felt, and maybe a little more on the top end. Most of this comes from a 4-2-1 design, but also the better tuned pipe size, etc. Also, they weigh a lot less, and less weight = quicker car in any case.
You may choose to go with a generic, which is about half as much, but expect it not to be legal in California, and also expect a slightly less quality product. I recommend a generic unless you're tlaking about a car that you plan on having for another 3-5 years. Whatever you do, do not get a "chrome" header, only get s Stainless Steel (real) or Ceramic Coated header, avoid painted ones as well.
Avoiding the "rice" sound (any 4 cyl and most v6 cars will have it to a small degree anyway), is kinda hard, but the best way to do it, is with bigger pipe, RESONATORS (they do not impede flow!!!), and a magnaflow style muffler would be my recommendation (not the canister styles!). http://www.magnaflow.com for their site. 2.25" pipe mandrel bent, with at least one inline resonator, and a magnaflow muffler, should yield a slightly louder than stock but "strong" sound.

yeah man thats a good response. i know that i wont feel the gain, if any, but like you said its a nice thing to have. So i am assuming you leaned toward me getting a dc header which is cool because i would rather not cheap out on my engine parts. Yeah i was thinking magnaflow. I want that meaty sound. haha
that was the first time on ht that ive heard someone say dc header was a quality product, from what ive heard all its gonna do is be lighter than stock and MAYBE a little gain, anyhow, i would go with ebay generic if youre just gonna do i/h/e, and for exhaust, just a magnaflow/dynamax/flowmaster muff and stock piping, dont go catback because you will lose your torque without the back pressure of a straighthrough design or larger piping, whatever you do, do not get a dc header, waste of money and you wont encounter any problems smogging/cops in most places
Actually bolt on mods do make a large impact. With the right bolt on's. your generic ebay garbage is going to make you lose power. While I do not recommend DC, they are a better alternative to the generic garbage out there. The generic parts are not designed with performance in mind, they are designed with cheap materials and with more emphasis on looks even though these generic parts rarely deliver on that. Choose wisely on parts you 'usaully' get what you pay for.

yah, you'll lose alot of low-end torque with a full catback, but your high-end power will be noticably better. i have custom 2.25" piping and a straight thru muffler, sounded like **** but the gains were ok, i recently had a resonator installed and it quieted down ALOT, it's sounds way better now and i got a little low-end torque back. the resonator did restrict exhaust flow a little bit, but getting some low-end torque back was a welcomed.
i got an obx header a while back cuz my stock header was dented, it didnt do ****. i/e is cool but unless you wanna dish out ALOT of money for a performance header, a cheap header isnt going to do anything at all.

you guys are right about DC 4-2-1 not doing **** on F22/23's, but i disagree on the catback making you lose low end torque. I have 2.5" piping all the way back, and low end is all I have. My car is pretty quick through 2nd gear, then 3rd just blows. I just have i/h/e and can beat all my friends bolt on gsr's to 60, then they walk me in 3rd. you won't lose **** with 2.5" piping!

Heh. The stock EX header is just about as good as you're going to get. That only header that might actually yield some gains is one from Kamikaze. 4-1 with a 2.5" collector. That setup is only good for n2o setups, though.

I bought one for my '96 and I would have to give it a
for performance. The car did feel much better after the install with a CAI, a Greddy Evo cat-back, and a high flow cat. The only thing I didn't like about the header, was that it didn't have a "true" 2 1/2" collector. It bottlenecks down where it meets that small length of exhaust piping that is between the stock up-pipe and cat. But for the price I paid, IMO it was worth it.
