Someone explain CA laws and smog
Someone please explain to me CA emissions and smog laws, I have been confused for quite some time. What I understand is every part for your car must have a CARB sticker along with it so it is street legal. Without it you will be fine with a ticket or something.
K20EG is building a K20 in his EG with ITB and custom header. I dont think any of his parts are street legal and he is building this as his 10 sec daily driver. I am thinking that not everyone follows the laws in CA and takes risk of being caught?
People who are boosting in CA have boost controllers and isnt boost controllers illegal? Someone please explain if people follow the rules there or do they just ignore the laws and try to take a risk.

If its a daily drive, all his going to need to do is have all the smog parts on his car and go get it smoged. (provided he has a BAR sticker) I think you could BAR a K20 in a EG/EK but im not sure.
Edit: Just saw you added this:

I have never heard of a boost controller being illegal, i knew a guy who had a boost controller on his RX7 and took it to the smog place, no problem.

Of course some people don't follow the rules. What do you think all the big boosted CA guys are doing? And it doesn't always matter if you have CARB numbers on your ****. Some cops will still write you up just to hassle you. You can obviously prove what you have is legal with the CARB number, but it's a hassle for you to get it signed off and what not.
Well I am guessing that people get caught by alerting the cops or during smog checks. What actually happens when they do get caught? How often would a cop check your car out for illegal parts?
So people just put on smog parts on the days that they are to be smoged and put the illegal parts back on afterwards?
I posted about the Edelbrock kit and Maruder had siad that boost controllers were illegal so turning up boost is not legal.
All I want to do is boost my d16 and reach 200whp with the Edelbrock kit but I am thinking that fuel upgrades and boost controller are illegal which limits me, if anyone can help me out it would be great.

A cop could check your car and ask to pop his hood if the donut shop is closed. I had a friend coming to work just crusing on in. He took a turn as a cop was going the other way and saw him, turned around and asked to pop his hood. The stupidiest thing.
And yea if you could pop illegal stuff off to pass smog and put it back on, why wouldnt they? I dont know anyone that would but if it works, then ehh. And for boosting just put the boost low when you go in for the dyno.

Yep, at my local shop, one of the former employees (who now works at Comptech) runs a B16b in his hatch. He had to spend a weekend putting in the stock D16Y7 for smog testing. This is in CA, of course. As for turbo kits on non-factory-turbo engines, some people--as said--pay off the smog tech or prepare ahead of time and remove all turbo parts and return to a smog legal NA setup. I got rid of my turbo kit before I was required to smog, but I'm 85-90% I would've failed.

yea thought something was odd. so if a cop stops you and you have illegal parts he gives you a ticket? I got the smog check covered.

Yep, or the part could be perfectly legal, but you might get ticketed for it. For instance, people have gotten ticketed for their AEM intakes (which are 50-state), 50-state headers, etc. It depends on the city. In Sacramento, for instance, I was never hassled for aftermarket parts when I was pulled over for traffic violations (speeding, not using a turn signal, running reds, etc.). But I've been told that had I been stopped in the bay area, the cop probably would've cited me for all sorts of ****.

CA is a good state ... except when you own a modded car.
The smog rules suck, too! Have fun out here. I'm from the Sacramento/Orangevale area but now live in Davis. And I'm sure it'll be quite different here in CA than AL.

first of all ITB's are illegal here in cali. the reason the laws are soo strict is that air pollution is getting bad here in cali.. esp the valley. Now Your friend above could pass smog if he keeps the smog equipment from the same motor year so all sensor and ECU.
Yes everyone plays with the law and guess what they are getting smarter and smarter.. The CHP now has authority to inspect your vehicle if they deemed it is illegal, so even if you do the swap the motor for smog check then put it back in you still can get screwed, they take pictures as evidence.
I think the law is good as long as you dont pollute the air then you deserve to be cited

Well its getting gay all over Cali these days, not sure if this is happening everywhere but here in South Cali Torrance, there's some gay cop squad that only pull over fixed up cars, make them pop open their hood, and take a picture of the motor. Then they make you take the car to the ref, if you changed something you're in trouble or some **** to that extent.. bottom line.. its gay.
Yea CA laws really really suck. However you can get around it, you just have to be smart about things. Dont do burn outs infront of cops, dont speed, dont ask for trouble. For instance, have a front license plate. Sure it might not look as cool, but thats a perfect reason for a cop to pull you over and look under the hood. Dont advertise yourself to be pulled over and you wont have to big of a problem.
The only tricky part is smog. A few ways to do it: Bi yearly motor swaps (sucks), have a blind guy smog your car, smog your girlfriends car as yours, or know a friend at the DMV (also illegal).
Me personally? I have an Arizona license and Arizona registration. hah no smog for me.

I hear that. When I was boosted, I was paranoid everytime I drove my car, and since it was my daily driver. . . .
I wasn't scared because of thieves but because I was afraid a cop might see my IC and pull me over. EVERYTIME I passed a CHP, he/she would stare at me.
Made me nervous like a ****.

Trust me...california isnt that bad. There are alot of other things that make up for the stupid laws. Head up into the background north east of LA into some of the canyons, or drive down PCH with the sunroof open. You can ski and surf in the same day here.
California easily makes up for the lame smog laws.
