Isuzu Stylus/Geo Storm ITB KiLlAs!?
so my curiousity was peaked by the ad on IT.com classifieds for a storm that boasts best power to weight ratio in ITB. so researching it, i find that except for the 1.8 DOHC which puts out 140hp that is NOT LEGAL, the 1.6 DOHC engine still produces 130hp! (102 tq) at like a curb weight of 2300. ITCS lists min weight as 2380 (thats with driver) and allows either 14 or 15" wheels, for the Storm at least. really competitive specs. (almost ITA worthy *COUGH*)
anyone else see these cars running in their regions? i checked the times of the seller, about 5 seconds down from the class leading volvos. surely this dohc 130hp engine can beat those whales?

yeah i checkedthe specs on that too, only thing going for it is its 1800 min weight. i think the engine is rated at 100. theres a guy talking about his swift buildup on it.com "other" cars forum.
I had a 91 Geo storm gsi with the 1.6 dohc. It was my only car that I have owned that wasnt a Honda, I tell you man that thing was tough as nails and pretty quick too. Losta plastic, but strong running gear. Id build one. What the hell. Sounds like you could clean up, if you spent some time getting it sorted.

that's the only problem with an oddball car like this -- YOU have to do all the development. with one of the common itb cars like the 2002 or the golf all you have to do is fork over the cash to buy all the goodies that have already been developed.
if a person had a decent engineering and fabrication background, it would be a really cool thing to do. besides, what could be a bigger chick magnet than an itb geo?

There was actually an entire strand on the Geo/Isuzu options at improvedtouring.com. Kind of interesting. The Storm GSi is a basically Corolla twincam with a small-port head that seems to be well respected by those who know it. The later Impulses hang the engine off the front of the car or some such thing are are problematic in the handling department, I guess...

I've seen one run before at several events. It's a good car on paper and it can make good power out of that little twin cam motor (I believe it's a 1.3L dohc), but at least the one I saw running always seemed to have some sort of reliability problems. Still now in ITB, I doubt there is anything else out there as tempting to build as the newly classified golf for ’04. Should have great reliability and with 2.0L power, it should make for a great B car.

And is the perfect model for comparison when trying to get the '86-'89 Integra moved from ITA to ITB.....
side by side...
Integra (ITA) 118hp 101tq 2380lbs w/ driver per GCR
Storm GSi (ITB) 130hp 102tq 2380lbs w/ driver " "
[rubs hands together with evil grin........]
:slaps forehead: DUH! It's a Honda product! I'll never get to ITB!

wouldint it make an interesting comeback to respond to the cookie cutter reply the CB gives "car is properly classed" with "well, one of them ISNT".

You mean Geo Storm GSi = Isuzu Impulse, right?
The Stylus was the sedan.
Also: http://www.robietherobot.com/s....html
They were faster than 10.5 0-60 second times. I actually almost bought one of these cars new back in 1991 when I was in high school.

Oh, and I've always thought the 92-93 1.8 GSi would make a killer STS car. Lightweight and good power with a decent suspension.
Good luck finding one in good condition though.

youre right about the stylus being the sedan and impulse being the coupe. but the impulse with dohc 130hp engine isnt classified in the ITCS (atl east online or on my 2000 gcr on hand). the impulse does indeed look more aggressive tho.
interestingly tho, the impulse ended up coming with AWD turbo 160hp 150tq....

Speaking from experience, the AWD turbo's are hard to find.

AWD Turbos were rare back in the early 90's. I'm sure they turn up every now and then today, but I haven't seen one for sale in the last few years that I have been looking on used car lots.
I recently joked with a friend that a Geo Storm spec class would be pretty kickass, they are nimble and cheap cars. I'm guessing aftermarket support and parts availability might be an issue though.
A friend of mine has an ITB Suzuki Swift ready for this coming season. Apparently the weight is very competetive (because, in his words, the car is built like a soda can). His biggest gripe ws that it's harder to find parts. We'll see how he does.

A few years ago, there was a Swift GTi that dominated the DC region ITB series (set track record that still stands AFAIK). I forget the owner, but he has since sold it and moved on. The car was then converted to FP. So, it can be fast in the right hands.
The Impulse/Storm I'm not so sure about. What are the brakes like? I seem to recall some talk of the suspension being poorly designed (like the car just doesn't handle well in IT trim). Not sure though.

coulda' sworn the 510 was in ITC, and has trouble with CRXen at that. I guess they outrun someone in ITB.....
