Default VERY Newb Question: What is crossover. And why do I need it.

Hi. I am neo1z. Been around here forever...but I dont pretend to know anything about audio.

Im looking at some Crystal Components...rumor is they are quite good...and my stocker speakers honestly dont cut it. Everyone knows that. So the speakers...they come with a "crossover". A crossover. What do I do with that?

Can I not just replace the speakers and tweeters and call it a day?

I realize this might be the most NooB thing every posted...I just need to know ya know?

thanks,
robbie

the crossover lets you adjust your tweeter pretty much and let's all of the equipment work in unison, that's not the exact definition but in my eyes that's what it does, i'm assuming you're buying a component set?

A cross-over is basically just a splitter for the audio signal...it separates the different sound freqs and routes them to the speaker that can best handle them...i.e. it strips the bass signals from going to your tweets and vise-versa. Very simple device, usually about the size of a computer hard drive.

Okay. Cool. So if a component set comes with a xover, do i have to do anything with that? Or do I just mess around with it until everything sounds good?

Also guys, my amp blew up for my sub. But I think i want my sub back. Its a 12" MTX 6000...anyway...this amp would suffice, wouldnt it?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...39735

I dont need a hardcore setup...obviously...I just need something to push the sub.
Thanks guys.

The x-over that will come with your components will more than likely not be tunable. It's a pretty straight-forward process to hook it up. Basically, you'll just run one set of wires from your amp, or head-unit, to the cross-over, then from the cross-over you'll have two sets of wires; one to go to the mid-range (5 1/4 or 6 1/2 ...usually) and the other set will go to the tweets. It's easy.

like this...don't laugh!!!

Wooo-hooo! we-todd-did style!!!
image station is down...anybody wanna host my horrible x-over drawing? it's pretty bad.

Looks decent enough...so long as your sub is capable of running @ 2 ohms, or better. Whether or not your sub can do that is dependant on if it is single or multiple voice coil(s). Having more than one voice coil gives you the option of wiring for different ohm loads. I don't know if you're familiar with all that stuff yet, but if you're looking to get a little knowledge you should check out the link in my sig, it's to another forum (all car audio). Those guys can tell you everything you need to know and might even be able to find you a better deal on that amp. Check it out...
