Which Clutch for 300hp Prelude?
Alrighty; I'm in the process of building a H23 VTEC, and found that a new clutch is needed.
My car will have an H23 VTEC w/ i/h/e/freemods and an 80 shot. I'm guesstimating a 300hp/250-60tq motor, at the crank.
Money is a big factor for me right now, but I want a good clutch w/ a good feel. Here's my options:
- Spec Stg.1 clutch, holds 270 ft/lb's, organic face - $299
- Exedy Racing Organic clutch, 36% inc. cap. - $265
- Exedy Racing Metallic clutch, 75% inc. cap. - $375
- ACT HDPP & Hybrid disc, holds 278 ft/lb's, 41% inc. cap. - $376
First off, help me w/ the figures for the Exedy clutches; how many ft/lb's will they each hold?
And what's everyone's recommendations on these? I like the price of the Spec clutch, and the Exedy organic looks nice if it'll hold the power I'll be runnin.
FYI, these are all prices from http://www.clutchcityonline.com

very streetable, just gives you a nice leg workout.
btw, stock rating is around 200 ft lbs.</TD></TR></TABLE>
i've used this on 2 cars now over 350HP and it is an awesome setup. stock engagement but definitely a workout till you get used to it. then get in a stock car and you push the clutch through the floorboard the first time

H23 VTEC + small mods (i/h/e/free mods) = ~220hp
Up to about an 80 shot NOS wet-set = ~80hp
It will be in the neighborhood of 300; maybe a little off, but close.

I will, but the prices are just a good comparison among the brands I'm looking at. I will def. be talkin w/ the H-T sponsors!
I've heard the ACT XTSS is overkill for what i'm gonna be running; the HDSS is a more reasonable setup.
So if the base is 200ft/lb's, the Exedy Organic should hold ~274 ft/lb's and the Metallic should hold ~350ft/lb's....which means I may be able to get away w/ the Exedy....anyone ever tried the Exedy Organic race clutch? I think I read that Laughin would roasted his everytime he sprayed....

Wow...I'm impressed...I had no idea that an H23 VTEC could make those kind of numbers with just bolt-ons.

well, stock H22's rated at 200 crank hp, I figure w/ the boltons, some slight headwork I've done since I pulled the head, and the engine combo that 20 extra hp shouldn't be a problem to attain.
Back to the main post.....anyone else got any suggestions?

The exedy organic will not hold an 80 shot on a prelude. I was running a 65 shot and launching at 5k and the clutch didn't grab until the end of the track when I let off the gas. When I launched at 3k and sprayed it held, but I don't believe in running a clutch that I have to baby just to get it to hold.

I just installed this setup on my allmotor prelude and i love it, its stiff but i like it, its not to much and you can make it grab right when you want it..

The cerametallic is really good....engages hard when you need it, but you can feather it some if you want.....its the cheapest of the bunch too.....I have yet to try it with my nitrous seeing as how im still breaking in my motor.....it chatters some though
If anyone needs a clutch, I have 2 brand new ACT clutches for the Accord/Prelude/CL that i need to get rid of. I have a ACT SS Disk and a ACT 6 Puck Disk. Selling for Cheap!!!! PM me for details.

thats what I use and it engages like stock but very hard on the leg, agreed. Its a fantastic combo and i have used it on 2 cars now. I also thing the 4 puck is nice too but a bit more aggressive on engagement but still very driveable.
