Anyone know how to ID what trans come with what Gears by the Black Stamp? All I was told was the Hxx something is the one to get.

It was me who broke open the casting codes.

 

Black stamp-Says S20 then some other caca.
I shall try to post pics.
So far, (3) different ratios-I'm thinking they should be the same as EX/SI, DX and CX.

 

mista bone has an awesome website in his sig (he posted right above you) about d series trannies. There is an engraving the tranny fill hole that determines cx, dx, and si gears on the s20 housing. Check is out.

Hey mistabone, if you happen to check back here, I was wondering if you changed something on that page? I swore it had info that was there, that isn't now.

Ive had a bunch of different trannys in my car. All my 92-95 trannys have all said S20 on them, including my JDM zc hydro tranny (which doesnt have the L3 gear sets as many people think, its the same gears and final drive as the USDM 92-95). The DX i have says S20, the EX i had says S20, my orginal and 2nd SI tranny both said S20. There is numbers after it but i have no idea what they mean.

You best bet is to check the final drive, and then use mista bones tranny page to figure out what tranny it is. You can also tell by how many rpms in a said gear (say 3rd).

Updated for the better and easier gearswap.

 

OK I know there's the S20 serial code, but the black ink stamp is on top of the tranny, close to where the mount holes are.

"J8"got one back from a customer-said this tranny sucks ash! Proly the gas sipping trans similar to our CX and VX trans

"C5E" or "G5E"-Similar to our DX/LX trans

"Hxx"-(still not sure)-similar to our EX/Si trans-these are the ones usually fittedwith goodies like LSD and 4.25 FD ratios-I make this claim only because a close customer did the "count the revolutions" trick and ended up with the number as the CRX SI tranny.

I apologize if all this seems cloudy and shady, but why would I make this stuff up?

PS-I'm selling these secret Hxx trannys at a discounted rate for...J/K about selling these but not kidding about the info.
