Default timing help!

i just changed the head gasket on my 85 civic hb and got it all back together. but when I try to start the car the starter just turns the engine. I have spark and gas going into the cylinder, and I lined up the timing marks on both the cam wheel and the crank pully.
I tryed puting the spark wires in a diff way acording to a diagram i had but it was backfireing through the carburator, so i know that it can ignite but it wont with them in the right place. dose anyone know what could be wrong?????
