Default car won't start until i rev what is the prob??

when starting the car it starts for a second and then just turn off. seeing the rpm guage bounce from 0 to 1500 then 0 again. but when i start then rev off for a 5-10 sec. the rpm starts to stay at 1500. i have to do it all the time when starting the car what can seem to be the problem??

But when you give it gas, it will stay started? I had a similar problem, the car would act like it was going to start but as soon as i stopped turning the key, it would cut off. I could give it gas while trying to crank it, but it would just fall back down to 0 RPM and cut off. The cause of this was a dead ignition switch.

I took it to a mechanic to fix it.. labor was more than the part

Well, that is a different thing that you are saying now, sounds like gas not getting through or something. We have an el camino here at the house, it just sits all the time, and when we go to start it up, we have to pump the gas pedal to get the gas flowing so it will start up. I guess it is considered an automatic clutch..

the reason for the el camino is cause its carburated and the fuel evaporates out of the bowl so you need 3 good pumps to fill it back up, dont know about the lude though

well, if you rev it for a little while and returns to normal rpm, then it is probably your idle air valve

yeah it's prolly either a vacuum leak or you just need to adjust your idle.
