Default What is up? - tires sizes and speedometer inaccurate.....

Got a speeding ticket (77 / 65)- told the officer that I had my cruise set at 74 - he told me to have my speedometer calibrated - go to a shop that he recommended - with my existing tires (195/50-15) on 15 x 6.5 inch alloys - speedometer reads incorrectly - 75 indicated was actually 78...

With my winter tires 195/55-15 on 15 x 6.5 steelies it was dead accurate....

If I plus1 the stock configuration for the 93 Hatch (185/60/14 original) I come up with 195/50-15 - same rolling diameter between the two - what gives?????

1st of all motor does not make a difference (not in this case)

if ur using the wrong profile ur speedometer will be inaccurate...... i also learned that the hard way.

YES it does make a difference. if he is using a motor, or should i say an engine swap, that would dictate what tire size would have an accurate speedo.

You're correct with the 195/50-15's (assuming that the car's original size was 185/60-14). The 195/55-15's are the ones that should be giving you the problem, and they would/should indeed give you and indicated 75 MPH on the speedometer when you are actually traveling 78. Try measuring the actual diameters of the stock and aftermarket setups, to see if perhaps the sizing runs large on your particular tires.

Even if the larger 195/55-15's were the correct size for that particular application (i.e. GS-R, ITR), running 195/50's should result in the speedometer reading higher than the actual speed, not lower. I'm not sure how many applications would call for a tire that was smaller than a 185/60-14 (CX/VX maybe?) That being said, what is happening in his case doesn't appear to make any sense, no matter how one looks at it.

Edit: Mainly because he claims to have no problems with the 195/55-15's, but finds that the 195/50-15's give a higher-than-indicated speed.

No problem. I understand what you're saying, but I'm just extremely confused by the situation. To the original poster, are you 100% sure that the tire sizes you've posted are accurate?

hrmmm.. i thought civics with 14" diameter rims had 185/65/14 tires stock? Because if that's the case it's nearly dead on rolling diameter of 195/55/15

92-95 si or 93/95 ex coupe ran the 185/60-14 stock. 96-00 civic ex's had 185/65-14's.

185/65-14= 23.46 OD
205/40-17= 23.45 OD

perfect tire size! there is always some discrepancies between manufacturers and OD, but your speedo should be right on the money

Southern Virginia State Police will write if you are going 11 or more over - PERIOD... - If you are traveling on Interstate 81 be careful from mile marker 60 to 73 regardless of North or South bound.
