Default k20a3/a2 questions

i am not new to the honda tuning scene, but i have never worked on a k-series before. i just recently decided to get a new Si. i will most likely be getting one in the next couple weeks.

here is my question.
i dont know much about the k-series as i said, but i have been hearing that the a2 and a3 heads are different. so, would it be possible to put the a2 head on the a3 block? or should i just swap the whole motor. i would like to swap the motor but it really depends how much it will cost. i would also like to get the ITR tranny with LSD. in the end i will be going with a toda setup. any help is appreciated. thank you in advance.

well it does seem like you are new to the search button....however..yeah you can swap the heads, but there will still be issues to deal with such as compression and such...you can also just swap the entire motor, or do a k24/a2 swap or somehting of the sorts...and as of right now you will have to have an a2 head to go with toda, as there is NOTHING out for the a3 head yet

you could get a quaife lsd or Jdm honda lsd (from jdmhondaparts.com) and it fits both the five speed and the six speed trannys.

If you havent bought the car yet then get a RSX-S. The swap including labor will cost you atleast $3,500 for tranny, engine, and ecu. The EP and RSX-S is less than 4 grand apart.

You can get an RSX-S for less than 20K? I got my Si for 16.5 and most people
seem to be getting them for about 15-17K fairly easily. Plus, insurance is
cheaper. /shrug

You can swap heads (I am not going into technicalities) but your compression is going to be a little lower than the RSX. Plan on spending some dough because none of the K-series engines/trannies are cheap right now. Especially the Type R components.

You can definitely do the swap for less than the difference if you do the labor yourself, especially considering that you can sell the A3 to recoup some costs.

One guy actually made money off his swap, because he found the best deal on an a2, and the right buyer on his a3. I wouldn't say thats going to happen for you, but there IS a market for A3's out there.

thanks hatch2k and gerhard, thats what i wanted to hear. i already have a spoon headgasket for the k20 so that should bring the compression up a little closer if i decide to go that route.

SORRY--DONT MEAN TO HIJACK---
But whats the difference between the K20a and k20a2? Where does the additional HP come from? Are the heads of different design? I did a search and couldnt find anything... also didnt want to start a new thread for it. If you guys can answer that for me...sweet. Sorry for interupting the thread though..

K20A (type-r motor) Has Higher compression pistons, higher redline and redefined fuel map. Also the cam duration on the lobes is longer for better high rpm breathing, and vtec point on ecu engauges at 5200

K20A2 (type-s and civic type-r) has less compression..11.5-1 i think, lower redlone, 8000, then tuned for lower redline. lower duration cams, vtec point is at 5600.

K20A3 (Si and base RSX/integra) Has only intake VTEC , exhaust has only one large cam. Intake Vtec engauges at 2/3 throttle above 2200 rpm. redlines at 6800, and has 9.8 to 1 compression....the baby of the k series./ But with the K-20A2 head swap, and a thinner head gasket for upped compression, the car will run just like a K20A2....add type-r cams and ecu....you see whre i am going. They are jsut like the old B series....easily swapable.

I did the swap, to a K20a and from there got the Hondata program. I picked up the car for $16,100. The engine was $5500 with approx 1-3k miles on it and it came with the transmission. Actually below is a cut & paste from the website I bought it from (http://www.hmotorsonline.com)

===============================
K20A (RSX Type R) Motor, Tranny, ECU

Price: $ 5500.00 Plus shipping and handling.
Availability: In stock and ready to go.

- Motor
- 6-speed LSD Tranny 4.7 Final Drive (Y2M3)
- ECU (PRC)
- Stock Motor Mounts
- Alternator
- Starter
- Clutch
- Flywheel
- Intake Manifold
- Exhaust Manifold
- Fuel Rail
- Injectors
- Distributor
- Engine Harness
- Comes With All Sensors Needed
=================================

The swap is tricky though in that you need to track down the damn header (stock one wont bolt up). Other than that you have everything you need.

16,100
5,500
_____
21,600

RSX Type S = 22,000

Your Choice!

Good luck and happy purchasing

you could have bought a k20a from jdmhondaparts with tranny for 5800 man, you should have shopped around a little more. they have 1 or 2 still in stock right now too. oh well
