Kleinubing rips off a record time to win the TC pole at Road Atlanta
With all of the talk about track conditions and hoping for a 1:38 flat to take the pole Pierre Kleinubing went out and on his 2nd pass knocked out a 1:37.499 to claim the pole for Friday’s Touring Car race. Pierre and his familiar red/orange and white RealTime Acura RSX was fast all week and proved to everyone that he would be a driver to deal with in Friday’s race.
Second fastest was the #1 Nissan SE-R out of TeamRTR of Peter Cunningham who clicked off a 1:37.552. The closeness of the margin wasn’t lost on Peter as he laughed and said, “Fifty three hundredths of a second!”
Cunningham then added with a big smile, “Boris (Said) told me, ‘If he (Kleinubing) worked for me I would fire him!’”
Right on their heels was the Tripoint Mazda Protégé of Jeff Altenburg and Bill Auberlen in the Turner Motorsports/H&R Springs BMW. But Auberlen was “way behind” Altenburg some 4 tenths. Ha! Actually by comparison that gap is rather large since the top three of Kleinubing, Cunningham and Altenburg were only 2.16 tenths of a second apart.
The gap from Auberlen (4th) back to Roger Foo (H&R Springs/Advance Clutch Mazda Protégé) was less than a second so the racing will be razor sharp once again tomorrow when the SPEED World Challenge Touring Cars take the track at 11:30 AM.
