ok just got 1000kms on the new spoon engine... need help
incase you may remember, I just finsihed installing the spoon engine... now I "THINK" i have finished my break in procedure at 1000 KMs not miles. I know the engine is lossening (you can hear when you shut off the engine, the pistons wind down a little more than at first when they would simply stop) up so to speak and clearances seem fine.
So heres the Q
Can I move to semi synthetic then synthetic now? I am not burning ANY oil what so ever!!! well nothing in the last 500 kms anyway. Also, "IF" the break in procedure is not complete what harm will i do if I remove dino oil now?
CLiff notes: 1000kms want to put in semi synthetic, break in procedure over or wait?

Maybe you should some more km´s (500) then change for a full synthetic oil.
Good luck with that engine
Good luck with that engine
Your first oil change should not occur tell you hit 7,500 mile (12,000 km)
Don't change the break in oil till then... ofter that you can use a good high quality regular oil or synthetic.
You don't really have to go with a synthetic if your going to change the oil every 3,500 miles (close to 6,000 km)
I'm sure some of you old crew to honda-tech remember the extensive debates about synthetics and if they are really worth it. Hell , we even had a person that actually manufactured motor oils to give us a heads up on what the facts were and he stated that the benefits don't justify cost.

A few months to a year or so ago, there was this HUGE oil debate on this board. What is the best weight, synthetic vs conventional, etc. etc....you name it, it was discussed.
The final conclusion...there is no conclusion. I honestly don't really think it matters all that much especially if you are going to change oil frequently.
So, for your question, I do believe the initial break-in period is important, after it is broken in, do as you please. Run synthetic, run conventional, run 5W-30 or 10W40 or 20W50 or whatever your research tells you is best, because there is no ONE correct answer.

that doesnt make any sense, one reson being the oil filter will not last that long on an engine that has already been broken in. while breaking in the clearances may not be ideal and you will get metal in the oil, it should be changed very often. with non-synthetic.
i was using castrol 10w30, i changed to mobil1 synthetic 10w30 after a few months and i couldnt believe the difference in rev and idle smoothness.

yeah, break in the engine for the first 1000 miles with regular oil, then switch over to the oil you want like full synthetic if the plugs and compression turns out good. I always thought of this as the standard break-in procedure.
And having read the whole damn thread about the oil debate a few months ago (20 some pages I think) all I remember is this: when using synthetic, you should not change the oil before 5000 miles because otherwise you're not taking advantage of synthetic and their additives, so you're wasting money. 5000~7000 miles for full synthetic, 3000 for regular.
bottom line, break-in period NOT over, do it for another 500km. Don't stay
at a certain RPM too long or the rings will cause blow by.

Ditto, and I'm not sure what the rush is to switch to syn. in this case.

same here.. well I did use Mobil 1 in my conquest.. it spun a bearing before it's next oil change.
No, I'm not saying it's related to the oil, I just post it to annoy the hardcore mobil one oil people

After 1000 kms I would say you are JUST broken in.
I wouldn't bother changing the oil until 3000 kms. For the next 2000 kms you should 1) get the motor up to operating temp - i.e. nice and hot and 2) start bringing the revs up in 1000 rpm increases. But I wouldn't go over 7500 until the motor is fully broken in.

Spoon didn't give you any recommendations or anything? Seems kind of surprising if they didn't, I know there engines aren't cheap from the fast and the furious, maybe give them a call and see what they suggest.
Note-Sarcasm on Fast and Furious reference.

Why not synthetic? I thought thte only difference is that synthetic doesn't burn as easily as Barney juice...

In this case it's being recommended against because of synthetic's purported "interference" with proper engine break-in, particularly ring-seating.

Quality non-synthetic oil is definitely not "crap". A search in the archives should return a number of discussions regarding the use of regular vs. synthetic, and the various arguments for each.
