the clearance between the bearings and the crank's journal helps to pressurize the oil, if you look at any journal there are oil galleys that transfers oil between the bearings and the crank journal. The oil between there causes pressure, so too much clearance will result in deficit in oil pressure as the oil will come out easily wihtout any resistance.
Another misconception that people don;t understand is the width of rod bearings with respect to crnak journals, i.e. compare a b20 or LS rod bearing to that of a GSR or ITR, the latter is much skinnier than the LS/B20 - I've seen people use GSR bearings in an LS rod/crank and have detrimentally low oil pressure, then they spin the bearings and blame it on revving to high when in fact it was because the bearing did not cover the entire journal so oil was *escaping*
