Default California people and smog...

Some of you might know but now in Californai they know strap your car to the dyno....they even have weight ranges that the cr has to meet...so no other car can be strapped on the dyno....damn i was thinking about starting another project since my turbo integra was stolen..but now i dont know...

where do you all stand on this?

So Cal has been doing the dyno smog for a while. I figure the car isn't going to pass visual anyways, so it's not like the dyno is going to make that big of a difference.

Go AWD and say **** the dyno?

I just put my **** to stock one afternoon, go pay the $35, and spend another afternoon putting everything back on.
We have the whole process down to 3 hours each way.

But thats the problem you cant just pay alittle extra....even if they wanted to take your money its not harder process. I my brother inlaw's civic hybrid never passed smog..he always "payed alittle more" Now he has to find the exact same car..same weight... Im not worried about visualization most places dont even care..as long as you pass smog.

Maybe im just going to run stock exhaust and run some sorta e cut out.

It's really hard to do that nowadays. The only real options to totally pay the guy off, or....to turn the car back to stock.

Reason is only the really classy places can afford the dyno/smog in nor cali, so...the people that would accept a bit extra are decreased.

So either you A: turn the car back to stock, or B: ....IDK hehe

uhh no, if your gonna pay more, there are many ways to get around dyno test, weight, obd2 ecu check, timing check, gas cap pressure check, even test only smogs
lets just say i seen plenty street race cars pass smog and test only smogs

all you do is find a good stock runing car, mom, dad, friends car, and get the hooks ups from a smog tech
ohh and if the car that needs smog is 96-up car, then you will need another 96-up car

Thats the best way to do it....and yeah it would work....until they require a video test that proves it is the same car on the dyno then ur fugged!

There's talk about putting a camera on the smog machines to see what is "actually" being tested.

I'm kinda in the same situation. I'm planning on boosting my Si, but I don't want to go through that hassle. If I showed up for smog with my friends stock Si, same year, same color and everything, but with my license plates on it, would it work? I'm not sure if the smog techs are supposed to verify it's the correct car by the license plates or the vin on the car itself.

yep they check the VIN. Im really not concerned about visual cuz some shops dont really care.. Im more concerneder about the sniffer....i wonder if i set up an exhaust with like 3 cats...if it will work

I don't know what shops you go to but for most shops, if you don't pass the visual, they won't even waste their time by putting your car on the dyno.

If your car is running right, 3 cats won't make a difference because the first cat will drop the exhaust temp to the point where any subsequent cat won't up to temperature to efficiently convert the gases.

i got to shops who know how hard it is sometimes for people who modify their cars.
as long as you pass the sniffer thats all they care about.

I would go to that shop ASAP, before they get shut down. I worked for CARB when I was in college and heard of many instances where the BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) would shut down shops after sting operations caught them not running the test properly. I think it was also a $50K fine for each car was proven to be illegally passed. I know of several shops that friends had used in the past and they are all gone...

Not that hard to pass smog, any Honda with a new/decent cat in place. If turbo, not that hard to take off the exhaust manifold, leave the intercooler in place, leave the FMU(if you run that) in place, just re-run vacume lines. If your not a the actual smog ref, nobody will care as long as the non legal parts are not connected.

What is this about dyno and car weights? Car weights vary soooo much within any given model. I don't think this is a problem. People with stereo sytems/etc have no problems with weight, so as long as you have a hatch smogging for a hatch, should be no problem.

As for running multple cats, should work if you have enough egt's. My stock Mustang had 6 cats, 3 per cylinder bank!

If your car is running close on smog, throw in some 100oct unleaded. Just did that at the smog ref when getting a BAR sticker(ref told us to do it, under his breath on the way out after the first attempt).

The vehicle weights are used to set the loading on the dyno. If you use a higher inertial setting, your engine will have to work harder to keep the dyno at constant speed with the variable load. If the engine has to work too hard, you stand a bigger chance of failing since those operating points may favor power over efficiency.

We have smog dynos in Wisconsin. But what they do here for OBD2 cars is hook up the test port and just check the ecu for codes. If there aren't any codes you are clear! I've never had a visual inspection.
