[FAQ] Official SOHC TURBO vs. DOHC n/a Thread
alright so here is the deal. i have come across an opportunity to do either a Greddy Turboed EG si hatch, or do a B16a2 powered EG hatch. Which would you say would be better, a turbo D, or an N/A B. Don't tell me to search either cause i already have. Thanks for your responses.
a turbo d16 would no doubt be faster.
but the b16a2 does have more long-run potential and is more reliable of the bat.
how far do you want to take it? what's your whp goal? ~190whp FI on the SOHC is a realistic goal.
b16a2 you start of with about 140-150 whp but if you turbo the b16a2 you can hit really high numbers with some $$$$.
i'd say b16a2, then build it up for turbo down the road.

but the b16 can produce more power in the long run. but when u boost the little d it will produce more tq then the b16. go boost. im working on mine as we speak

sohc turbo hands down. I would never choose a b16 over a turbo d. If you want a b series then at least get a b18c. Then maybe turbo that later on.
I'm going to stray away from what everyone else is saying here for a second. If you are not very knowledgable about turbo setups...then the turbo hatch may not be for you unless you are willing to learn and break things. Also, there is going to be more maintanence on the turbo than the NA car. With that said, there is nothing that makes me as happy as boosting!!!
N/A B series!!! listen, if it were me, i would get the b16 car, then buy a LS block, swap the b16 pistons in, and boom have a bangin LS/vtec that will DESAMATE ALL!!

. If you don't have a lot of money like me then n/a D may be for you. Cheap to build and can make some decent power. IMO its not worth it to buy a b16 if you already have a sohc vtec unless your are going for much bigger power, but if that was the case i'd just buy a b18c or maybe even b18b because they have good torque and are great for turboing.

Im in the same boat as you. I dont know what i wanna do.
But I think the best way is to prolly save and get a DOHC. The reason being the
dual cam is going to have more potential down the road. I like all motor a lot, and
the DOHC all motor is a killer setup.
But on the otherhand, sohc turbo is also a sick thing. But as I said I think i rather
start out with a better platform. Then save and down the road: b16 turbo b18
turbo, or all motor.

id rather have a N/A b seris ove a GREDDY d seris. just my opinion
if you would say an apex-i kit on the d, id say go with that.
but honestly, if you are going to swap in a motor at least swap in a bigger motor. the b16 is still just a 1.6 litre. it wont feel faster until you are above 7K rpms. where it will still pull and your sohc vtec has died out. B18c1 is minimum for N/A imho.
