Default Oil Sampling (SOAP)

Has anybody had their oil sampled at different intervals to determine change intervals?

I have seen ads and kits for sale in various mail order catalogs.

Anyone know if it's worth having our used oil tested periodically?

Yoshi,

I read on a BMW Club site that some members had their oil sampled after 15,000
miles! and the oil was still good. BMW'S have very long drain intervals. they use a
Castrol synthetic and I think the filters are a micron type. A computer monitors the
type of driving ect. and A light in the dash tells the owners when to change it.
some of the members were skeptical and had their oil tested. I have read that synthetic is so good that it can actually be filtered and re-used.
I am asking mainly because I use castrol Syntec in my daily driver and change it ever 5000-6000miles. because its so expensive I would leave it in longer if possible.

I have a sample to drop off at NAPA.... just need to do it... I have had it sitting on the workbench since July

With heavy equipment... oil testing is the way to go!

I will scan the results and post them here once I get them back.

Rick:

My dad drives a 95 BMW 530i, but I take care of all the maintenance. The car usually goes almost 15K miles between oil changes since that's about the time the computer says it requires changing. Of course it doesn't get driven as hard as my ITR, but it still blows my mind how long it can go!

yoshi - who changes his oil every 5000 miles w/ Mobil1
