wtf, Can't Remove Transmission!
Hey folks,
I'm stuck. My plan was to replace all the trans seals and rear crankshaft seal and clutch. I'm one step away...I can not for the life of me separate the trans from the block. I've removed all three mount brackets (front, rear, and side) I've removed the 4 four upper bolts and 2 lower bolts, basically, everything the service manual asked for. I can separate the front up to 0.2", but I can't get even the slightest gap in the rear. I even used a bottle jack between the trans and alternator backet to pry them apart...the bottle jack is now broken (yeah, I know that may have been a dumb move) The rear must still be attached somehow. Do I need to remove the starter? I'm at a loss here. If I can't get this off my only option is to drive it until the clutch is too contaminated with oil to drive, then junk it. If so, its replacement will be a tracker (omg, I know. perhaps that's enough motivation to respond :-) ) Any thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated.
THANKS
-Jeff

I have not removed the starter, as it is wholly connected to the trans (it seems) and the service manual didn't mention it. That was my next idea. Is that it?

that's it. the starter is connected to the flywheel...once it off your ready to drop.

You dont need to take the sterter out but I bet you forgot to take the flywheel shield off of the tranny. Its on the bottome of the tranny and its just a black shield to fill the gap from where your tranny hangs below the level of the block. BTW if the starter was connected to the flywheel then the fly wheel wouldnt turn. The starter only touches the flywheel when its engaged, at all other times it sits just behind the flywheel.

If you're talking about the clutch cover, that's already off. I dropped the exhaust, removed the two engine braces (the two forged brackets connecting the engine and trans) then I removed the cover. the only thing that isn't removed is the starter. It seems odd to me that it would need to come off.
fyi, this is a 93 del sol si (MT, SOHC 1.6) for clarification

yup, i think we got that one. its just up and rearward of the pass side axle opening on the trans
This is great, I think I've got it licked. The morale was pretty low yesterday but I think I just had a morale-gasm. If there is a long starter bolt, that's gotta be it as that was the only place we couldn't get separation (we got 0.2" separate on the front) The funny thing is we pulled out one of the starter bolts just to see how long it was. must have been the short one :-)
dammit. Its going to be a bitch getting this work done during the week. Thanks a bunch everyone. I'll send an update tommorrow. if you've got more ideas though, please keep them flowing.

ITs the bottom starter bolt i think that goes into the engine just take the starter off its easy just take the wires off and the bolts and your done. And then pull the tranny off. Just lower your motor so your tranny will clear the frame and viola! Its off.
yay, the first time i swapped a clutch, it took me 12 hours!
I was just unbolting everything I could see and eventually it started falling off.
Yay!
(sorry, i've been watching too much crank-yankers)

Actually, haven't removed the starter yet, I'm at work :-)
And yes, the shift linkages have been removed. (I can just picture it though, I yank so hard the shift lever comes with)

Well I finally got home that day, starter came out, and the trans just slid out. I penciled that right in to my service manual.
Thanks a lot everyone.

hey, make sure and clean your dowel pins and dowel pin holes really well before you put the motor back in (if it's kind of old).
This way it'll slide back in very easy.
