Condensation and Black Stuff sputtering out of my exhaust...what could it be???
I just had my LSVTEC built motor put in. It currently has almost 400 miles on the engine but it's been sputtering out some black stuff and either fuel or water on the ground out of my tailpipe. My motor builder first told me it is condensation from when my car was just sitting in the garage for about 2 weeks when I was on vacation and he was putting my motor in. But I would think it should be gone by now after about a week and a half. I have an FPR set at 46 psi using stock RC injectors and a Mugen programmed 93 GSR P61 ECU. I don't believe I'm running rich b/c my compression is 11.3:1 with Endyn RWs and I sometimes have to bump up the FP to 48 or 49 psi to avoid pinging. But I don't know what this is. I tried smelling the fluid that comes out of the tailpipe but it doesn't smell like fuel. And the black stuff I don't know where that could be coming from but it even covers my exhaust tip a bit even after a 5 mile trip. Any suggestions or comments. Any input or theories are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for you guys' help.
ok, i have the same problem with mine but it may be different, the condsation is normal at startup till maybe when the engine warms up, anything after that is probally not good. as for the black stuff, i think its carbon, no if you just got your engine built it sholuld not be coming out that bad, my engine has 110k on it and burning 2qts of oil every 250 miles, the whole back of my car gets covered in a fine black soot, soo, maybe your piston rings didn't seat properly??
i certanly wouldn't be happy if i just got the engine built and have it put out that much carbon, something doesn't sound right

That black stuff is carbon deposits that exists in the exhaust system...
That stuff that looks like water is exactly that... H20..
Both are a result form normal combustion and part of the process of removing CO,NOx, and 03 , all of which are the harmful type emission...
this is the purpose of a catalytic convertor, to remove the 3 harmful emissions, thus being called a 3-way catalytic convertor... : )

I'm having the same problem with my LSVTEC, it's sputtering out water from the tailipipe in excess amounts, strange thing is - Just started doing this after I adjusted the idle.. I don't know what it is, mabye somebody else out there knows. I'm going to do a leakdown test to see if my compression is healthy, but I guess my main question is, What causes condensation in exhaust???
I've been told it's from the gases cooling while going through the exhaust (the water at least). I have the same thing happening though. A little black smoke if it's been ideling for a while and then get on it... and of course the water and carbon.
compression is healthy, fuel consumption is a little high, high flow cat, fresh tune up (cap, rotor, plugs...blah..blah), obd1 ecu, 00b18c, eats about 2qts of oil between changes.
the only things I haven't checked/cleaned/replaced are: fuel pressure, o2 sensor, pcv
If there's a solution to this I'd like to try it, cleaning the skidmarks off the driveway is getting old. Or at least an explanation

I have an LS with header and test pipe and I noticed that this morning too. I think that it is just the soot like when the bumper gets dirty from the exhaust. And look at other cars in the morning, when they accelerate water comes out the pipe. its the same thing, but just gets dirty on the way out.

Water vapor is a direct byproduct of combustion. And the black stuff is carbon. It's really not that big of a deal, every car does it, if you lean it out a little it will help reduce it. Read more here:

for the black smoke comeing out its problobly a air fuel thing and as for the water for every gallon of gas burn u make a gallon of water its normal when having a exhaust with out a calitic converter .............please excuse the spelling
