Run a normal maintenance on it. Clean it thorougly, change the oil and filter if it needs it, lube and clean the chain, spray all linkages down, and try to drain the tank as much as possible and put stabilizer in it. Fuel sediments settling in the bike is no good. Keep it on a charger and start it once in awhile. Also, remember to move the bike up and back a foot at a time frequently. This way you dont' get flat spots on the tires. If i missed anything, let me know.

You put a certain amount of stabilizer in per the amount of gas you have in the tank... I keep about half a gallon in my bike and put that much stabilizer in it. I know many people who leave alot of gas in their bikes over the winter and when they go to start it, they have probs, and end up finding out they have injector/fuel pump/fuel line deposits from the gas settling and the sediments being sucked in.

Livng in snowy Utah, I have found that any day with dry roads gives me a chance to take a short ride. I try to do this once a week if possible, if not start the bike weekly. This will keep the bike working. Also, some times it is fun to bunddle up and take a ride around the city. Dry roads is the key.

Clean the bike, get an oil change (not necessary), take out the battery, and add fuel stabilizer. If you don't take the battery out, you'll have to start it once every 2-3 weeks and you'll be good.

make sure your fuel tank is full, then put stabilizer in or you will get condensation in your tank if its not full!

All the guys sayin you need to turn it on every now and then are wrong. Unless you can get the bike up to full operating temperature you are doing more harm than good. This I know, the rest of the suggestions i will take in, Thanks.

Oh yea you can ride here. Its definatly cold, it dipped into the negatives for over a month last winter. We got hit hard with snow last year also, I think it only snowed about 5 times, but they were hard. One was like 28inches of snow. Compelete BS, i hate cold weather and snow. Goin out to AZ in a month to check out colleges, should be nice.

n00b question: Are the steps taken to store a bike for the winter a function of the lower frequency with which you ride or the colder temperature, or both?
