You're right. Any performance advantage of the ex over the lx is offset by it's 132 lb heavier weight. Forget about the V6(auto). It's only .8 second faster than the 4 cyl(manual).
If performance is what you're after, you're gonna have to either build up the engine, swap an H22, or turbo.

Dude. You're comparing apples and oranges. The two are neck to neck. The only advantage an ex have the lx are creature comforts, and perhaps .01 sec faster. A more experienced driver in an lx would beat a ok driver in an ex.
By the way, car performance depends also on weather conditions. Even in an identical climate, sometimes the same car is slower or faster than its rated speed. That's because there alot more factors at work than the engine alone.
Like I mentioned before, Even the 5th gen v6, since it's auto, is only .8 second faster than the 4 cylinder manual version. The fastest timed 6th gen manual(carsdirect.com) managed 8 seconds, while the v6(auto) version barely managed 7.8(edmunds.com).
If the 5th gen lx or ex are your only options, I would opt for the ex.
This is like comparing the STI and EVO. Sometimes the EVO will win(ultra-precise handling), sometimes the STI(Raw Horsepower).

hmmm....vtec on accord....who cares? vtec on accord is almost worthless. you cant even feel it kick in, much less hear it, so that means its really not doing a whole hell of a lot to keep your car movin. if you really want a vtec advantage over a non vtec engine, just get a damn h22a! you can prolly feel that thing send your ***** into your throat once vtec kicks in, and without vtec its already sending em there anyways, vtec jus gives em a nice push.
the price-point between a used LX and EX rapidly comes together in the second-hand market. For the difference of a few hundred bucks, you get OH so much more in the EX. Even if you left it stock, there are subtle nuances to the EX like:
moonroof,
rear swaybar
firmer stock shock/spring specs
lower profile tires + alloys
more torque/HP/better gas mileage
power ajustable driver seat
better quality fabric materials
just to name a few
but try and find a 5spd. If it's the diff between a LX 5spd and a EX automatic...go w/ the 5spd.
Or be like me and wait to find that cherry 5spd EX.

the ex's vtec profile seems to be mostly for economical purposes. there's really no noticable performance differences between the ex and lx given the weight differences between the two.
i'd still opt for the ex however, unless you plan on swapping the engine anyway, or boosting it (vtec just makes it harder to tune).
either route you take, id recommend getting a 94-95 since they're obd1, it'll be a little more responsive to engines mods and easier to tune down the road.
keep in mind none of these cars are in the least bit fast, if that's one of your main concerns.

my freind had a dx i got a ex. I can woop him in his dx with my ex ,but when i drive his car i can beat my ex. that shows how close they are.Its all up to the driver. but go with the ex (4 dr) and get leather+h22 = sporty but luxory haha
why does it suck.
I have heard that you can not advance the timing on obd2 because the computer will put it again at the same timing. is that right?
I have a 97 accord.
How the obd2 sucks what are the benefits and disadvantages?
