about to buy a yamaha 600 need advice
I was wondering what year you guys suggest...
it's gonna be my first bike so yes i plan to drop it once, twice, maybe nine times lol
i'm looking for something around the 3500 range i'll be saving up 1500 then financing the rest.
i want something with good aftermarket support but not looking for much i just want it to cruise not race or anything like that... maybe i'll pick up some spinnaz for it lol
well if you guys have any opinions on year, and model
any help would be appreciated

any year yamaha 600cc bike within the price range you want would be good. of course a newer year and less mileage will be more expensive, but a older year yamaha 600cc with more mileage will be a lot cheaper and will be a great starter bike. Big thing, take the motorcycle training course. Very good course, you will learn a lot. As far as laying it down a lot. Thats all on you, drive safely and smartly and you will have a less of a chance of laying it down.
Good luck!
Good luck!
thanks yeah i'm def taking the class at my school... might as well it's free!
what is your opinion of yamaha bikes in general? good riding/cruising bike? not to uncomfortable?

I've got an FZR 600 Yamaha 94' It was a good bike to start on, not insane power, but not a complete dog either. It's light, handles well.
Want to buy it?
I'm gettin a Gixxer750 next summer.

dear everyone on honda-tech.com: what do you think about yamaha?
Come on, we are partial to hondas, maybe you have never owned one, but doing so makes you a life long supporter. No dissing yamahas but honestly any honda bike is backed up by the name we all know as high quality.
If you do get a yamaha, check out yamaha-tech.com for support.

Sweet! Do they offer tips on the tuning of my piano? I think it might be a little off...
I have nothing against Yamahas. They have some great bikes. I got to ride my friend's R6, and that thing steers sooooo smoothly (compared to my hulking F3), but the riding position SUCKS for me...too much weight on my wrists! They also have the YZF600R, which is a pretty comfy, reliable bike. And let's not forget their uber-tourer, the FJR1300. But, in the end, my vote is still for Honda.

not really stuck on them it's just that my friend liked yamaha's and said the ride is awesome,i myself have rode a kawasaki before that didn't ahve a problem with that....
i'm not really biased towards any brand itself but whatever i can find a good deal on but i guess resale on yamaha's are low so i'll probbaly be looking there

you can get a 97+ yzf600r for pretty cheap nowadays. They've been unchanged (frame/motor) since 1994. I had a 96 which was pretty forgiving. A bit piggish in the parking lot, but fun to ride and learn from. Decent power and makes as much torque as an R6 down low.

A few words of advice...
1. If you plan on dropping a bike from normal riding either (A) don't buy a bike because we don't want to see you get hurt, unless you're goin to be stunting which is still very dangerous or (B) take the MSF course, which will lower your insurance and provide you with a world of knowledge
2. You have to make a decision as to whether or not you will outgrow your bike quickly... if you can live with a yzf 600 for awhile then go with it, definitely cheaper but not the power of the r6. If you go with this bike keep in mind aftermarket support will still not get it to the r6's power levels. The R6 is a great first bike to learn on provided you ride within your limits.
3. You're price range is boardline being able to purchase an r6. You may be able to find an old one with a lot of miles or one that has been down and has some fairing damage. Whether or not you can live with this is up to you. Also, remem this is the best time of the year to buy bikes, because they are the cheapest.
4. If I sound like your mother at times above, sorry... good luck and let us know what you get... check ebay, sportbike(s).net, cycletrader.com, etc
