how to shave door moldings?
actually i am, but i was hoping to find a way around welding it.i was thinking just glassing it, i dont see why people think it will crack so bad. none of my sub enclosures ever have. and thats alot of stress, and temp change.
hope you have years of body work under your belt .. eveyone thinks its so easy to get the to come out straight.. if you dont weld them up ill bet there wavey as ****. its not easy.
I've got a friend who has a 93 DX and he tried to shave his molding, along with his gutters. He used regular bondo, and the gutters cracked so bad. The side molding came out VERY wavy, and eventually started to crack as well. If you want to do it yourself, make sure you know how to weld, if not, I'd say take it to a professional. Or even just get a WW RS kit with doorcaps, bye bye side molding.

well im gettin the ww sides but i dont like the door caps. but ill just see what i can do on my messed up door. and if it turns out ok ill do it to both, if not i have to get a new door anyway.
In order to do it and have it last, you have to weld in a filler plate and then use a thin "skim" coat of bondo to make it smooth!
You can't use "glass" for a couple reasons; It is fairly brittle and will vibrate at a totally different rate than the steel around it. It will also react to heat differently than the metal around it. Now you may not think it's a big thing, but give a thought about when you close the door hard or when the car sits in the sun for several hours.
You can't just fill the opening with bondo due to the fact that bondo will continue to shrink for several months! REALLY, it does! If you do it, get it perfectly smooth, and then paint it; two months latter you will notice that it's shrunk down low. This is why when doing any body work, you should keep the thickness of the bondo thin! It will still shrink by the same percentage (based on thickness), but it will not be noticable.
All of this is based on BTDT.

well what ill probly end up doing is welding a strip when i weld up my exhaust. same with my rain gutters. they should be fine as long as i weld a strip in 1st then filller over it right.
hope you have years of welding experince under your belt other wise your gonna heat up the panels and have them warp all over. if it was really that easy everyone would do it.

thats my car and fenders. i never did it before and if you can see a wave then please point it out to me cause i've never seen one. the doors arent gonna crack unless you slam the hell out of them. the glass is gonna break before it cracks. i used fiberglass/bondo. nothing is welded. the fenders show how its done. and i know the fenders are wavy because theyre not done yet. it just takes time to make it look good
yeh, if you kow anything about welding, you know that sheet metal warps when it gets hot. thats why you spot weld! one spot in the left bottom corner, one in the right top corner, and work your way letting it cool as you go. it is impossible to warp it if you just use spot welds and let it cool then grind.
ive been taking welding classes in school and im majoring i autobody repair, but ive only had welding so far.

dang man your car looks clean as hell like that! i need to do mine. i will probly end up welding a strip in so i wont have to use so much filler , or bondoglass. but ill def. have to weld the gutters.
you guys are idiots ..if you knew anything at all you would know without me having to say it that i was refering to once its painted .. you cant see dick in primer fool.. take it to the next level and start using your head. AND on top of the how would i see waves from a side view of the car smart guy. to see waves you would have look down the body panel.
My bad! When I wrote my first post to this string I thought he was asking about shaving the door handles.
However;
98AccordEX; the photo of the side of your car looks fine but I'd still be conserned with shrinkage of the bondo over time. If it's at all possible, I'd recommend that you let the car sit for as long as possible and then use PPG K200 filler to account for shrinkage. Please believe me that bondo WILL shrink over a long period of time. I'm NOT trying to be pissy or start an argument. It's just a matter of having been there and done that.

honestly i could really give a **** about what my car looks like. if it were up to me it would look exactly how i got the car. red fenders, blue hood, gold inside, white hatch, red doors, gold roof. its just my girl convinced me to make it look decent
i just did a lot of thin coats. allowed them to completely dry then sanded each coat down and added more. then used a skin coat thing(i forget what its called exactly) to make it perfectly smooth. i actually primered it once and saw some waves so i sanded the primer off and did it again. now its pretty good. i havent seen any waves and i look at it everyday. its getting painted black so i'm sure i'll see them if there are any. now that i think about it, i may change my mind and make it white

thanks.. its a old pic.. i changed that lame muffler for a greddy trust and it looks much better now.. i only used that pic to demonstrate the paintjob.. i did everything "with help from professionals' except for spraying it. it not easy to do body work and make it look acceptable. its a big thing to try cuz unless you got money to burn to get it resprayed then you only get one shot to get it right. dont let anyone on here tell you its easy.. you have to make the decision to either keep saving up to get it professionaly done or to risk doin it yourself.
You can allso warp it with grinding the welds.
I worked a place called graphics unlimited for about 3 years and learned allot. its not hard just take your time, but yes you will want to weld it.

hey dumbfuck. i didnt take the pics to show everyone that i shaved the moldings. i took the pics just to have pics of the car and i happened to see the post so i posted them. i dont give a **** if you like it or not. i dont give a **** if it cracks. its 13 years old. it doesnt need to be the best looking car in the world. and trust me you can see plenty of waves in primer. why do you think i did it over again? cause it was wavy fool. yeah maybe there will still be some waves. but guess what? I DONT GIVE A ****. if you dont like my car then dont look at it. i dont care what people think of my car. and i spent less than $50 for everything. so go take your 13 year old car that you spent more on shaving the moldings than the car is worth. *******
