WTF do the honda tranny codes mean?
Like the topic says, I can't seem to figure out their logic behing naming the transmissions the things they do? Does the code have anything to do with the gear ratios, or availibility of LSD?
To distinguish the differences is my guess? s80, ys1, what do they mean???
besides the meaning of trannys, but maybe the internals as well? Beats the heck outta me!

don't think you understood his question..

sorry to say the "tranny codes" are more like chassis codes(dc,db) as to what chassis but not what trim level(gs,ls,rs,gsr, type r). if you have a s80 or y80 i could be any one of several trannys. from my experience the s80's were only in the 94 integras. this also carries over to jdm trannys too. so in reality if a y80 was on your floor it could be a (ls,gs,rs) or (gsr) or (type r with a 4.40 fd) or (type r with a 4.785 fd).

Yup and USDM ITR trannies came with a stamp that says "J4D LSD" I should know I have a 2000 USDM ITR tranny

I don't think it is quite like the chassis codes. Using the chassis codes I could find out what parts are compatable with it, and between what years it was manufactured, but the tranny code doesn't tell me anything. What gear ratios, LSD or not, what car it came from, what engine it came on, what size clutch to use....
anything, but this sight : http://www.allmotorhonda.com/t...s.htm is pretty good!

i know what you mean by a stamp (painted numbers on bellhousing) i was just talking about the white label. it IS NOT a chassis code but kind of like one seeing that it is from an integra but it does not tell you exactly which trans it is. i should have been more clear about that.
