white smoke
so i went to change my oil at the shop, i had 5 qts of mobile 1 in a bag, and the shop used all of it when they were only supose to use 4 qts and i leave one to fill up my oil when my car consumes too much of the oil, so the oil level was like higher than the 2 dots on the dipstick, and i read in the manual it was bad for ur engine that if the oil goes above the upper dot. so ne wayz today i was in the parking lot and i revved my car, and like white smoke comes out, but when i drive i do not see any white smoke coming out, so i ask my fren to rev the car while i go out and see, and i think white smoke only comes out when the engine is above 5k or something, but only a little comes out when he reves, but if i drive theres no white smoke coming out? so is it going to get worse and worse and then i have to rebuild my engine? oh yea i checked my oil and its up to the upper dot now
what do u guys think? did the shop **** up my engine, is it gonna be ok or no?

Hey.....about the smoke, a lot of the lude owners say that it's normal for the smoke when you hit vtec. A lot of the lude owners have that oil consumption problem too. BUT, today when I went to the dealer, I asked about the smoke thing, and the tech told me that it's not normal for lude running properly. So, I really don't know what to think, cuz it happens to everyone but the tech tells me otherwise.
and it never happened before until i did my recent oil change(revving the car when its idling and a lil white smoke comes out) and my car is not vtec
Errr uhhhh if you've got a H22 it should take 5 quarts.
White smoke means there's water getting into your combustion chamber. Usually caused by a bad head gasket. Pop your radiator cap and see if there's oil in your coolant.
Blue smoke is oil-burning smoke. This would be indicative of a blown piston ring where oil is getting past and into the combustion mix.

aaaaaah, my fren said i mite have a leaky gasket!! i gotta check my coolant tomorrow, is it costly to fix? ****!!! NEVER GO TO ****** ASIAN CAR SHOPS
Pretty much never go to an Asian speed shop. They don't know ****! And about the gasket, just go to Napa or the Honda dealer and get one. Probably around 25-35 bucks. It's not to hard to do if you know what you're doing. Good luck.
thnx guys, but would filling up my oil above the top dot a little bit be the cause of my leaky gasket, or is it just normal wear and tear cuz my motor has 147k miles
white smoke doesn't always have to be bad. But it usually is. Remember, the car smokes white when you first crank it sometimes cause of condensation, or moisture.
More than likely if you have a blown head gasket, you will run hot. That's another symptom.
If it's black smoke, that's fuel
Light blue smoke, and it's the excess oil burning off.
And no, a head gasket is NOT cheap to replace. Cheap to buy? Maybe. Cheap to replace? Hell no. You have to take the head off the car.
Has your car ever overheated? When you look at the bottom of the oil cap do you see a white haze on the oil, or any water beads?

my car has never overheated so far, i havent looked at the bottom of the oil cap yet, ill take a look at it today; but on my exhaust tip, i see some evaporated water vapors you know? like there was water there but it burned off
Well, when you car get abused like mine, it smokes all 3 colors!! Im starting get get a little white in my black/blue haze now..
You will see the black when you remove the cat.. Some still do it w/ the cat.. Preludes run rich, so black happends, certainly at hi rpms..
You get the blue when your rings/valve guides start going south.. Its the oil seaping threw.. If you burn blue, replace the spark plugs often, I have too!!
The white.. Well, show signs that your head gasket could be starting/ head could be warped, or a cracked waterjacket.. When you get the white, that means your motor is going downhill, and there are no brakes to stop it's progress..
Good luck man.. Just run it till it don't run any more =~)

Well you take good care of the motor right? Regular oil changes and maintenance? Don't overstress it too much?
Hopefully it's just a failing head gasket and your whole motor isn't going south...

Yeah, if it's white smoke; it's coolant. Other conditions can cause it, but not consistently. I had white smoke POURING out of my exhaust months back, only under vacuum. While on the car in boost, there was no coolant being burned, but once the system went from boost to vacuum, the vacuum was sucking coolant through the head gasket and it was burning. I re-torqued the head bolts and it fixed the problem. You may want to try that first, just to see if it changes. If so, it's time for a new headgasket(and timing belt(s), o2pump, ect)
