Default ignition timing

ok i have the cam timing set at tdc using the white marking. the three other markings are behind the white marking.

i am trying to set the ignition timing. I jumped the ignition timing adjusting connector ( i think, does anythign noticable happen when you jump this connection?) i had no yellow rubber caps i just found a blue connector that had a brown and grn/wht wire on the passenger side dash.

with timing light hooked to #1 plug and pointed at crank with distributer full advanced i am showing the WHITE marking and when i retard the distributer the white marking goes conter clockwise and is NO WHERE near the red marking.

what in the hell am i doing wrong?

I never jump that connector, but then again maybe I am doing something wrong. All I know is you set the cam timing with the cam and the piston timing with the crank pulley. So you should have said that you set the pistons at TDC. Anyways the reason the white is no where near the red is cause you retarded it, the timing would then therefor be off of TDC. Hope I made sense.

When you timed the cam,did you use the Si mark?
The Si cam times differently than the standard/HF model..look here:

Look at the center circle that says "Si"..

i included the fact that i know cam timing is set correctly using the white marking on the crank and the cam gear set to top as a refernce and to avoid that question.

with cam timing set correctly i am NOW trying to set ignition timing and don't get why i am seeing the white mark with timing light instead of red mark.

yes i used that mark to set the cam.

and i am doing this technique http://www.binghamtonlife.com/...8.jpg

however with timing light going it shows the white mark in the pointers not the red....

what kind of timing light are you using?? Does it have a **** on the back or just a standard one?? If it has the **** on the back it should be at 18 degrees and then it would flash on the white mark for TDC. If its a standard light your off either on your cam gear or crank gear. Your looking directly thru the sights right???

basic light no *****.

this is all a problem cause I did replaced the distributer itself. but my understanding is that it only fits one way so i couldn't install that wrong? the other thing i noticed while putting the new distrib on was where the rotor screws on the shaft there was no notch but the rotor looked like there was suppose to be one? i don't think you can install that backwards either, can you?

SI or SOHC ZC. Round Diz plug and MPFI

Now back to the problem at hand. Idle would have to be around 750 with nothing electrical on. Its a warm idle that you set it at. The rotor button can go backwards but the car will not start. When you jump it it may hold a steadier idle, mine lobe up and down about 50RPM at any time

I used a paper clip cut off so it is a U shape.
You will not notice any difference;it just lets the ecu know the timing is being adjusted so it does not try to alter it..

Did you change the timing belt? if so, possible they gave you the 1.5 belt which is slightly different.
PS>I know cam timing is one thing and ignition timing is another,
(I do this for a living..btw)
but the distributor is run off the cam,and usually if you are unable to set the ignition timing to specs, that can be a sign the the cam timing is off.
Sorry to ramble,Just trying to help ya..Phil

the only change i've made is a new distributer assembly.

i did notice while trying to read the timing (this is with the jumper in) that when i raised the rpm's the timing moved counter clockwise (not sure what to call that) is this suppose to happen??

getting flustard that my car is running like poo poo

The connector you speak of is the "service" plug. You may notice that your car runss like crap if you don't use it(from what I've been told, it puts the ECU in a holding pattern while you make the adjustments)...then after you turn the car off, remove the jump and start the car it does the remap and systems check now with the new timing. If you take off right after you finish you may notice that your car will lope or even die after returning back to idle

thanks, I thought there was another connector that needed to be jumped. That clears it up for me.

On my 90 si, i noticed that when it is correctly jumped, the check engine light goes on and the ecu wil begin flashing. Make sure to pull hazdard fuse to reset ecu when done timing. Just some FYI.

ok then i know that is isn't properly jumped then cause i saw no lights. thanks for clarifing.

i did notice that it idles corretly, but when i first begin to move its slower than dirt. but once i hit 3k it seems to pull timing correctly and i take off. my own version of vtec...

which fuse is the hazard fuse? i've seen it referenced everywhere but i have no idea where it is.

thanks

Hazard-under hood fuse box.
CEL I've never seen come on when you have the timing jumper correctly. This would be in 3 cars this year and 1 was just done saturday.
