Default modifying stock HG for higher compression

i heard of people using just the center peice on a headgasket to get higher compression i was wondering if this was safe or not... or if anyone has done it... inputs?

I have done it without problems. But now that I can afford to raise compression the right way I wouldn't do it anymore. Besides it's only about .2
