Cold morning start + shift into gear = car chokes and dies... help?
Lately my car has been acting up in the mornings... when i go to start it and shift into gear, the car begins to choke up and almost dies (it dies totally sometimes). If I let it start for 5 minutes or so, then it's jus fine.
I know i should let my car idle to normal tempurature, but there's those times when u r in a rush...
What causes this? Forgive the noob question, but it's never done this b4...

'91 is too old for me, so I'll just kinda guess...
On my newer cars, it works like this. When the transmission is in gear, there's a signal to the ECU, then the ECU opens up the IAC valve a bit to raise the idle. Maybe that signal from the shift lever to the ECU is disconnected?
Some older cars used a separate solenoid valve that opens with the transmission switch. Just like the IAC valve, it lets some extra air get thru to raise the idle a bit. I don't know if '91 had that older kind of system.

my 5th gen does some really random stuttering after starting sometimes. it'll jerk really hard and feel like it's stalling out. but like i said, its very random. can be at cold starts or warm starts. it's strange.
must have something to do with IACV or TPS.

thx a lot, i'll look into it, but can anyone explain why it works well after a letting the engine warm up? yeah, total newb question here...

Once the IAC valve gets warm & shook up a bit maybe it works better... Plus, when the engine's warm the IAC valve can hold a good idle without opening up quite as wide.
