rich, lean ?
running lean means you have more air comming in then fuel, and you need more fuel to even out the air to fuel ratio. Running rich is the exact opposite, you are running too much fuel and not enough air. thats about it.

you are not talking about autometer crap right??
the target air fuel ratio is 14.47 to 1 which give you the fair balance of goooooood emission and economy.
when the car start in the cool mornint, it should be somewhere around 8-9 to 1
the leaner the more mileage you gonna get, the richer(to some extense) will give you more horsepower
