Default Azenis or semi slicks ?

Falken does not offer the Azenis in Germany, that`s a fact. But I want a special tire for next year for my track and auto-x days..
I could get the Azenis from an american soldier for a low price, so I`m wondering...
I know most of you guys choose the Azenis. What are the differences to semi slicks like the Kumho Ecsta 700 or the Yokohama A048 or whatever..

The semi slicks only last for one day on track or 6000km street traffic. But they grip as hell. On the other hand one semi slick costs 140 Euros...

Maybe somebody who knows both sides can clear this up for me. Thanks !

do you plan on just tracking the car ? or also drive it on the street w/ this type of tires ?
my friend has the Toyo proxes which are a nice auto cross tires , but you can not drive them on the street unless you plan to buy tires often. While with the azenis it allows you to have fun at the track and on the street without spending much money and they last way longer .

Okay, important info missing...

1) I am not allowed to drive Azenis on the street (no permit)

2) Toyo Proxess T1-S sucked for me.. Those tires get hot and then they are like soap. Car understeers a lot..

I need a tire for race ONLY and have those three choices:

1) Semi Slick
Good: Street permit, fantastic grip
Bad: Only takes 6000km or one track day, cost 140 each

2) Slick
Good: Maximum grip
Bad: Last only one or two track days, no permit in my racing class, no permit on the street and cost hell

3) Azenis
Good: Low cost
Bad: No permit on the streets

The info that is missing for me now:
a) Azenis grip compared to semi slick ?
b) Azenis grip compared to a slick ?
c) Azenis grip compared to a street tire ?
d) Azenis grip on the front tires... Do they grip that much that the car won`t understeer likeon a street tire ?
e) How much track days can the Azenis take ? More than one ?

I'm not sure if the Azenis are right for what your asking, Have you thought about Yokohama A032R ?
Size Price
205/55ZR-16 B $172.00
225/50ZR-16 B $184.00
235/40ZR-17 B $191.00
245/45ZR-16 B $184.00
245/45ZR-17 B $204.00
255/40ZR-17 B $208.00
P255/50ZR-16 B $180.00
P275/40ZR-17 B $228.00
P315/35ZR-17 B $268.00

Or if that tire is too much money how about something like Kuhmo MX, I just put them on my car and I like them so far But yet to see any track with them.
Other choices that might be suitable for you...
ECSTA V700, V700 Victoracer, BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KD or a cheap way out might be the Sumitomo HTRZ- I had them a while back on a RX7 and I did like them but never saw any track time either.

Good luck on your decision

I would get an TUV approved R compound tire (semi slick) for your car, because the Ring is like a public road. If something happen on the Ring or any public road and you don't have street legal tires, you could have a problem with the police/insurance.

I see a lot of cars using the A048 or the A032 on the Nordschleife......

I would say A048, RE540, Trampio, P Zero Corsa, or similar on the track and S-03 or S-02 on the street.

BTW. The RE-01 is very popular in Japan......

You mean if you were to crash your car on the "ring", your insurance will cover the damages....sweet!

Ken,

the ring is something different... I also like to go to track events where racecars can be driven on slicks without street permit. You can`t get there on street tires.. would be very dangerous because people would crash in your back in the curve..

So I`m looking for a tire I can run instead of the expensive semi slicks on track days in Hockenheim or Dijon, or grand prix course Nuerburg... Street permit would be a bonus but that`s not my main idea.
For the Auto X races I could use Azenis easily

why so ?

Your saying that after a while the tires you have get slick, the Azenis does too, And thats why I recomend the R compound tires.

Ah okay..... so the Azenis starts to get slippery when hot.. Okay, means I have to look for a race tire... But that`s too expensive..

Track event cost: 250 Euros
1 set brakepads: 100 Euros
Fuel: 100 Euros
Tires: 560 Euros

Makes more than one grand for only one trackday...

Better sell that R

Azenis is still a street tire, they are ok for track use cuz it has stiffer sidewall compare to most street tires out there. Many ppl had found their Azenis start getting "greasy" (overheat) after 4-6 laps (of couse it's depends on the layout of the track, temp and driving style).

If you're looking for perfromance over price, I will suggest R-compound tires like Toyo RA-1, Kumho Vic-racer/ V700 or semi slick like Advan 048/032, Dunlop D01J.

I don't understand why you said semi-slick only last 6000km or one track track
are you plan to use them to driving on the street too? I will get a extra set of tires just for street use so you can extend the life of your track tries.

Also learn how to "protect" the tire when you on the track....it will help you to save $$ too. I'm using the Kuhmo and so far it has been used for 8 track day and there's still enough rubber to go for another 4 days.

Hockenheim burns through a set of slicks in one day...
There are guys who start at 9,00 am and leave at 11,00 because they run out of tires or/and rotors...
The ring is another story.. You don`t have to brake and apex that hard. You better try to let your car get smooth through the curves by choosing the right line.. But one lap is 20km long so you better watch your tires temp. My front tires sucked on that track so I wasn`t able to stay in line after avoiding a small animal. Two meters grass and finally the wall took away my beloved ITR#01858...

So surviving both tracks is a question of rubber...

Look into the Kumho MX. Very comparable grip to the Azenis, and from all the first hand accounts I've seen, they handle the heat much better than Azenis.

They are marginally more expensive than Azenis(~$10-20USD more per tire).

Why not try the Brigestone RE540s http://ms.bridgestone.co.jp/ms....html

They are very popular too in Japan. I dont know if they are available in Germany but I bought them from Malta (Europe). They grip like hell! I bought the 205/50/15 for $170 each.

FWIW I used Kumho Victoracers (like the V700) for as many as 4 track days and they also served me well in several autocrosses on the ITR.

Also, a set of Victoracers lasted me 5 races in my race car, though we're talking about a 2000lbs car too.

The guys that you know that roasted a set of V700's in one morning, how heavy were their cars and is the track surface generally rough on tires? That seems unusual to me.
