Default Pondering a PG7 ECU for my '90 Si...

ok, I've been a good n00b and I've done a search. from what I can gather the 88-89 teg ECU has better ignition and fuel maps. but it hsa a tendancy to run rich unless there are a whole lot of NA mods on the engine (which I don't have yet). so I have one good question and one stupid question:

good question: is there any reason to run a PG7 instead of a AFC and ignition timing computer? like are there any other advantages besides the ignition and fuel maps?

stupid question: is there any way to be sure the computer is a PG7 by looking at it? is there a stamp or something? the junkyard I scour is terrible with the dates they put on the cars. they should say "88 +- 3 years" intead of "88." they never get it right, and sometimes the cars are too far gone to tell at a glance what vintage they are. so is there a stamp on the ECU I should look for? or a certain sequence in the VIN number?

the pm7 is off of the DOHC ZC and you probably will not find one in a junk-yard here in the us. You must be thinking pg7. all ECU's have a sticker on them saying what they are. A pm7 (jdm) has a higher rpm limit and different fuel settings. As far as the PG7 (usdm) I'm not sure as I have not dealt with them.

Good luck finding a PM7 they are as rare as hens teeth, I should know I just bought one after looking everywhere. But then I have a ZC twincam Blacktop so that is why I was looking, PM6 and PG7 both make less power with my motor. However if you got gains with your motor I don't know, PM6 was mapped got your engine, the PM7 was mapped for the ZC Twin Cam and the PG7 was mapped for the Teg motor, all of them different engines with different fuel maps. Yes closely related enough the ECU's will run on each other all beit with some power loss on the wrong engine. You may want to consider Chipping your PM6 its cheaper, and will let you compare a few different maps if you buy a few different ones. To see what works best for you without the major layout of a whole ECU. Just my 2 cents worth

Yeah, sorry everyone. I meant PG7. see? I'm still a n00b. that's why I put "88-89 teg" in there. just in case I got it wrong . I never was good with names.

anyways, the only reason I'm even thinking of this is that I can get the 'puter for dirt cheap. the pick-apart yard near me is 30 bucks/all you can carry. so I'm going in there to get some stuff I need for my car (climate control panel, etc), and I can get some goodies while I'm at it. if I'm paying 30 bucks anyways, might as well get as much as I can right? certainly if I didn't have this resource I'd just get my PM6 chipped.

still, thanks for the info and advice so far.

some PG7's from the 86-87's are vacum advanced and dont work.. even tho they are PG7's
make sure the date on th eeuc its 88-89...
and if its a87 try it anyway in case its a 88 car produced late 87

out of curiosity, why try it on osmeone else's? is there the potential to damage the engien? like fry the dizzy or something? I figured this is either a hit or miss type deal. didn't know I could do any actual damage with it. the only thing people seem to complain about is smelling like a petrol refinery at WOT.

Igg, stick with a PM6 (original Si) or a PR4 (90-93 Teg) and get it chipped. I am currently running a PR4 with a Mugan chip. You can get a ZC program or run another program if you want. I can change the chips in less than 5min. I can even run the stock chip if I wanted to. Later on when (or if) you want to go turbo and run 450 injectors just change the chip with the turbo program. It's the cheapest way.

IM me or send me e-mail. I'll explain more about it.

pg7 allows to rev higher , id only get it if you had a d16a1, zc , z6, or a y8, it's gonna make you run rich, and it should be labled with year and code right on the side

i have one, and i watch myself all the time now, i wasn't paying attention and got her up to 6700 on a stock d16a6 motor, that's waht you have to worry about when you have a 6k motor and a 7k rev limiter.
