does it grind? when was the last time the tranny fluid was replaced?
If the fluid hasn't been replaced, do it with honda mtf or gm synchromesh? or something like that. Usually that will get rid of some problems. About teh reverse gear, it's a small gear, about an inch in diameter on a shaft aobut a quarter of an inch in diameter. I don't know how strong it is, but I don't think it would go out... unless you do burnouts in reverse

I don't believe reverse is synchronized. Make that know - who wants to synchronize reverse to the forward gears? To make it easier to ruin the transmission?
It is a straight cut gear, which could affect how easy it is to engage, and there is a lockout that helps keep it from engaging while moving. Try double clutching to get engagement or shifting to first then reverse.

I have tried shifting through the gears but reverse still won't engage it seems as if something is blocking the gear
guys thanks for the advice, I will drain the tranny fluid today and replace it see if that makes any difference

how's 5th gear?
i know my tranny was messed up like that, if you try to shift it into 1st and then go into reverse, it'd work......something like the interlocks or something was messed

sum times i can't get it into reverse so i shift into 4th then put it into reverse and it goes in easier, but i have a LS tranny so i don't know if it's the same prob (it's not my tranny fluid either cuz i changed that wit Honda MTF not to long ago).

the reverse idler gear may be stuck, or the arm that places it between the main and countershafts might be out of place. somethings not right if its not going in. if you try changing the fluid and that doens't get you anywhere, its time to pull it apart and see whats going on in there.
i've had the same problem a few weeks ago. open up the tranny casing and you'll see that its either the bearings or gears are broken.
btw, reverse doesnt have synchros.

Weird thing, but I had a similar problem, but it turned out that I would back up fine in reverse, then go to throw the car in 1st and it wouldn't move anywhere. Turned out to be that when I did my swap and popped my axles in, the retainer clips I bought new, weren't properly stretched, thus not grabbing the spindle and my passenger side axle was coming out of the spindle, so my car wouldn't go anywhere. Took the axles out, bent the retainer clips a little bit, then my axles seated properly and didn't have the problem again.
If it's a problem with the car going into reverse, it's not gonna be a synchro because reverse doesn't use a synchro, hence the reason why you need to put the car into another gear before popping it in reverse to prevent grinding. It's probably what the other guy said, the reverse idler thingy. That sounds like it makes the most sense to me. Take it to an import tranny specialist if you just can't figure it out.

had a similiar problem on my stock clutch, was running 200whp on it for a while and I broke a spring off the clutch plate and it was bouncing around in my tranny causing my clutch to stay STUCK engaged SOMETIMES. so 20% of the time I can shift, 80% I couldn't.
