ep3 noise (suggestions?)
ok here's the deal, i have a 03 ep3 with a greddy evo catback and i just had installed a 22mm civic type-r/rsx-r rear sway bar. once the install was done i went for a ride with my friend and the greddy exhaust was clunking all over the place beacuse it was hitting againt the new swaybar. so i had the greddy evo taken off (taken off after only 2 months and is sitting in my basement
). now the car has the stock exhaust back on it and it is much better but still makes a rubbing/clunking noise only on semi agrressive or sharper coners. if i drive like a grama life is good but i'm not that old yet
. my friend also has an ep3 with the same rear swaybar and a comptech exhaust and eibach prokit(1.0f/1.1r) and he has no clunking sounds at all from the swaybar and exhaust combo, what's the deal? now that i have the stock exhaust back on is the rubber hangers adjustable or is there any way to adjust the exhaust? if anybody has this setup i can only stick my index between the exhaust pipping and the sway bar and it's a very tight squeez for my finger to fit. sorry so long and if any one can help here it would be great. thanks

hey rob this is jon, anj's friend, i traded in my 2001 ex coupe for a 03 EP anyway, i think when we went to the track last time i didnt have my ep3 sway bar on my em2 coupe. i got it from anj when he got the type r sway.
Anyway when i put the Si sway on mine i had a thermal cat back and it did the same things that u are describing. i tried to remedy the problem with some thermal wrapping and some clamps. It worked for a while maybe a month or two but i kept having to go underneath and tighten the clamps.
After a while i found i had a hole in my exhaust right where the hangar meets the pipe. I think it is from the vibration and the suspension moving during driving. if i were u i would try to fix the problem fairly quickly to try avoid a hole in ur exhaust.
My mechanic said that he could heat the part of the exhaust up and bend it. I decided that i would try it with out it and it ended up putting a hole in the exhaust so........ i would bend the pipe if i were u. another thing that might make things worse rob is the coming weather as the car is cold the pipe will rattle more seeing that it will expand when hot and not when cold.
what about a custom midpipe? sorry for the length

the noise was awful with the greddy system, that's why i took it off the same day i had the sway bar installed. now that the stock exhaust is back on it's 100 percent better but i can still hear a faint noise from that rear section when conering with bumps in the road. i'm going to see if i can have the hangers adjusted at all. all i need is just a tad bit of more clearance and then it'll be all good. i'm not going to give up on this one, it's kinda funny that anj has no problem with his at all with the comptech exhaust. i think either he's very lucky or he can't here it with the sound of the comptech blocking it. anybody else have any thought on this?
u can only stick ur index? between stock piping or the greddy?
i had a problem w/ a tanabe exhaust hitting my bumper on my old eg. I haven't looked under the car where the hangers are but that's where i solved my problem w/ my old car.
i'm pretty sure they didn't change the way honda hung their mufflers, but on my old car there were 2 black rubber pieces that held on the muffler from its hangers to the hangers on the car (the ones on the can itself). These black rubber thingies had 2 holes for the hangers and a gap in between for flexing & expansion/contraction. what i did was get a nut or something really thick and stuffed it in that gap between the holes. this way the rubber pieces can't contract as much and the tip wont hit my bumper.
you might want to give that a try. if you use too small of a nut or whatever you use, it'll fall out during expansion, so you'll need to make sure its tough to get in and too tough for it to fall out on its own. plus you might have to do it to a different hanger closer up towards the engine if any (assuming that they still use the same rubber pieces)
good luck

my index finger can fit with the stock exhaust, the greddy..... forget-about-it!!!!! it was so hard against the sway bar it wasn't funny. the hangers are still the same way, they haven't changed. where did you get these nuts or washers that you used and what size where they? thanks for your help.
i just got whatever nut i found in my tool box. dont know what size dont know how big.
you can probably get them at home depot or anything... just look at the fasteners section where they have bolts/screws/nuts etc etc
as long as they get wedged in there good, it should be ok. washers are really thin so i dont think you can use those.
you get what i did though right? if i remember right (i did this about 4 years back), i had one of those thick ones perfect hexagon shaped ones. not the ones w/ the little circle rim on one side. hehe dont know if my description made any sense =/
your exhaust will still bounce up and down, but wont be as high up. i'm not 100% sure if its enough for your greddy though, but if you do it right, i'm sure it'll work for your stock exhaust.

rob, im wondering if comptech thought about people putting the type r sway bar on their ep3 when designing the exhaust. maybe they designed it to hang a little higher....i dnt know just a thought
