Bad b16 gas mileage?
Hey guys. I have an 88 DX hatch with a jdm b16 w/ S1 tranny.
I have jdm cluster and while i was trying to figure out how accurate the gas gauge is, i also figured out my gas mileage.
I got 200miles and filled up my tank with 9.857 gallons so thats about 20.165 MPG.
I thought i'd get better gas mileage than that....what do you guys think? what kind of mileage are u guys getting with your b16? And the gas tank capacity on a 88 DX is 11.9 gallons, right?
Thanx in advance.

hes right the S1 tranny revs really high on the highway... you should look into putting an LS 5th into your JDM S1 tranny. Then you will have the acceleration of the jdm S1 and the taller LS 5th gear.
OK u guys b16a looks like they are very evil.
my b16a SIR II gave me about 200+ miles on a 10 dollar fill.
I went to modesto and came back I also have a YS1 92-93 GSR tranny with OBD1 I guess that is what saves me GAS
fyi: ECU does wonders on GAS Mileage trust me!!! I know!!!

Hell I don't care on the gas mileage, just as long as my motor is healthy. I am always zooming up and down when I drive my rex so all I have to do is drive normal to get better gas mileage.

thanx for the replies guys... thats 20mpg's driving um..."aggressively"....downshifting, sometimes gunning it to the speed limit, and i do a lot of freeway driving. If i drive "normal" my last tank was about 23~24 mpg.

ohh why didnt u say so thats normal then

shoot i fill up every 250 miles, thats with about 2 gallons left, so i fill up usually at 225 or something.
But I get only about 18-20 in the city. J1 is just as bad.
As for the ls guy, it's easier than you think to do the 5th gear swap, since they are sold out of them.

its not really the tranny, its driving habit. with a tranny like that, you have to slow it down, dont do anything about 70 mph (its safer anyways). but even still, i used to get like 300-320 on a tank even w/ my mugen ecu, now i'm getting like 240 a tank. i'm fuggin pissed.

Well the car should eat up some gas with the mods I have, but when did I say it ate up oil?

B16 with an S1 and getting approx. 30-36 MPG. w/ a/c .
check your 02 sensors and their location @ the ECU. it matters!

where do u have ur 2 o2 sensors located on ur manifold , or header.. i just swapped my motor and im running a 99 civic si manifold and its only got 1 o2 sensor bung at the rear. i am planning on getting 2 new bungs welded to the front but should i have them in runners 4 and 3 or 2 and 1? also, which one should be the primary o2 sensor.. sorry the Q's but it sounds likeyou are someone who actually wired your o2 sensors correctly.

here's my setup:
old skool JDM RS*R 4-2-1 stainless header with 2 02 bungs welded in @ cylinders 1&4 and 2&3 in merge area nearest the 4-2 flange. One wire 02 sensors are non-heated and that's why they are near the head.
Cylinders 1&4 is the primary (white wire) and should be wired at C16 on a PR3 ECU
Cyl's 2&3 (yellow wire) is the secondary and is wired @ C8.
If you have been experiencing the slight hesitation prob's that many people complain about on the their B16 then this is your fix. I was allways running rich and hated the part-throttle cruise at constant speed hesitation. This fixed it
And for all those that don't believe the 30-36 MPG, I'll post up gas receipt's if necessary

The higher the octane, the slower the fuel burns. That's all I know of.
edit: Also, if you're not running a chipped ECU, it requires you to have both o2 sensors hooked up. If you do have em hooked up, make sure they're new; I talked to a ton of people that had absolutely awful gas mileage because their o2 sensors were on their way out.

The couple I knew with this swap were getting mid 20's if they took it easy. Makes me love my ZC that much more, CAI, header, 2.5 catback, fast as hell and still gets me 34 to a gallon as long as I keep it under 70 mph
dood this isnt a zc posting place..j/k..you want better gas mileage then get a good tune-up(new o2 sensors, new ngk or denso spark plugs, valve adjustment, fuel filter, dis cap/rotor,etc.)
a good tune up might do it. i will check my O2 sensors later...im not getting any CEL's and my O2 sensors are in the stock locations. My set up is: jdm b16a, s1 tranny, aem short ram for a del sol vtec, hks sport cat back, no cat, stock ecu.
thanx for the replies guys.

A lil OT, but i tried to change my fuel filter today, and i coudlnt budge the 17mm on top there... i mean Cadamn. I gotta try to find a 1/2" drive and give it a whirl... Anybody else have this problem?
ya those things are on there tight..i changed mine a few weeks ago and i used one of those oil filter type tools to wrap around the filter and hold it not letting it spin then i had my brother take the bolts off..good luck, try to get someone to help you..also dont forget to put those crush rings back on the fuel lines.or else you will have leaks
