Well, just got my KYB AGX Shocks and H&R sport lowering springs yesterday in the mail. I just called FOUR differant places and they all said they dont install customer products? Just wondering how hard it is to install shocks and springs yourself and if it is a good idea or not. And to anyone who took theirs to get installed... how much did they charge you??

I already tried search and all it is is people asking for help on installing springs and shocks...Does anyone know any good sites with instructions on doing this yourself? or anyone feel like spending their time explaining to me how im guessing taking off tires, draining the brakes, taking off brakes, talking of shocks and springs, installing new shocks and springs? im also guessing its A LOT harder than that.

 

pretty simple install but requires a spring compressor which i'm sure autozone or pepboys could let you use. take your struts and springs up there and I'm sure they'll do it for you.. besides that it's just a couple bolts on the a-arms.

 

holy ****..... just got a call back from a shop and they said for the installation of 4 shocks and springs and an alignment check its $360.... ummm, not what i expected but yeah cars arent cheap. Just called autozone... they dont do it

It's a big pain but I tried it for the first time last week and it wasn't hard, just a big pain. Buy a spring compressor and go to town and have a friend to help you.

EDIT: it's actually a lot easier than you think - take off the bolts on the top of the tower and the mounting bolt(s) on the bottom.. thats it. Don't have to drain brake fluid or any of that crap.

 

just get a couple of freinds and do that **** yourself, you could have it done by the end of the day if you work hard. oh and be careful with the spring compressors they can pop off if you dont get em on straight.

 

do you think the local honda dealership would do it? i want to *attempt* to do it myself but im afraid of ******* it up.

 

if you dont feel comfortable doin it... then just have "that" shop do it. just make sure they know what they are doing.... sometimes it's better to take it to a "regular" shop vs. to a local "speed" shop. ANY decent auto-repair shops will be able to do shocks/springs....

autozone sells parts...not installations. autozone has a loaner tool program where you can borrow the spring compressors.... you pay for it but when you bring it back, you get your money back.

and please... do get an alignment afterwards... like 1-2 weeks later... so that the springs are settled.

yea, if you do decide to have someone do it... dont go to the $360 one!
shouldnt take more than 2hrs to finish

 

local shops here charges 45 per shock/spring, thats 180 haha plus wheel alignment is like 50, 230 max i would say, imma sure u can find a place that will do it for 150, then get an alignment for 50, and ur set, if you were close i had do it for u for 100

 

Good news, my girfriend just got her car back after getting the oil seal/gasket or something fixed on her car and while we were waiting i asked if they do shocks/springs..... 3-5 hours max at $45/hr and like 15-20 for the spring compressor ( they dont have one i guess) and she said she highly doubts it would take five hours. so im happy and yes the alignment is a must.
Quick question... anyone with H&R sport springs get a camber kit or is it not necessary?

I have an issue with this write up. You dont have to separate the rear control arm to get the assembly out.

 

Hey, listen to Tekwon-V. He's right in saying just take it to a regular shop as these guys replace shocks on regular cars when worn, so these guys know this kinda work.

If you're gonna try urself, my advice is get ur car up on a ramp and with some wd40 and an air gun have the mechanic loosen then retighten the nuts/bolts that you'll need to take off. I've just done this on my 93 JDM to fit my Eibach and KYB AGX - what a f**kin difference!

Take a look under ur car. The backs are straight forward - 2 nuts in the trunk and 1 long bolt under the car. The fronts - 3 nuts under the hood, 1 bolt gripping the base of the shock/top of the wishbone and 1 bolt gripping the bottom of the wishbone to the lower arm - take a look and ur time and you'll be fine......good luck!

 

Most shops dont like working on double wishbones and independent multi-links. They just give you a dirty look--that why it costs so much. I've heard quotes as high as $100 a corner. Then I did it myself and realized how simple it really is. Just use common sense. Or bring it to me and I'll do it for $100.
