mini me vtec activation
i have like no money left and i bought everythign i need for a mini me vtec swap. I cant afford a vtec controller. i was thinking.. could i hook up a tach with shift light and put in the pills so that it sends a signal to the light, and i could splice into that wire and hook it up to my vtec solenoid. That way i could adujst it and also i have a nifty light to sho wme that my vtec is on. thanks to anyone who can help
yeah that would be really cool, and also if ur smart u could make a cover for the light out of electrical tape and cut "vtec" in it. thatd be pretty sweet lol. wow i need to save some moeny and do thngs right lol
well if your on a budget the tach wouldnt be the cheapest way
just run two wires into the cabin and everytime you want vtec to activate touch em together until you can hook up a simple toggle switch. haha

Ya, I've heard of people using the Tach with a shift light to activate their VTEC. Another way that doesnt cost too much is an RPM activated switch. You can take a look at the MSD one with the pills as well. Just plug in the pill yuo want for your VTEC activation point and then when you hit it, the switch will engage vtec. When it drops below that rpm point, i believe the switch will then disengage your solenoid.
Im not sure about how the tach w/light will disengage the solenoid. Does the shift light stay on the whole time past whatever RPM you have it set to? Then when it falls below, shut off?

my friend tried it that way (with the tach). i was just not impressed with the results. it is not safe to run in vtec without the proper fuel changes. i was in the same situation about a month ago and i just ran without it, until i could afford Zdyne one wire conversion. it is really worth the money in my opinion.
The Zdyne is the way to go. Or even convert to OBD-1 using an adaptor harness. I believe you might be able to get the harness from http://www.jdmhondaparts.com but I could be wrong. The harness plugs right into your existing harness, then right into an OBD-1 ecu. This will benefit by giving you the proper vtec activation and safeguards, such as proper engine temp, oil pressure, and fuel curves.
Zdyne is easy, it just plugs right into your existing harness, and the 1 wire will go directly to your vtec solenoid. Someone please correct me if im wrgon anywhere.

Convert to obd1, that way you wont have to tune it, just get the conversion harness from blown90hatch, z6 dizzy, 4 wire o2, and put that it, works soooo nie, i love mine.
but, with your idea, ussualy, the switches on teh msd rpm switch and such make it so when you get to that certain rpm, it closes a GROUND, not a 12+ line, so when you try to hook it up to the vtec syliniod, your just ground out your shift light to the vtec syliniod, which doesnt work. YOu need the bosch relay to turn that ground wire into a 12+. Someone on here has a diagram to use.

im going to use the y8 head does that all apply to the z6 and y8 head? i want to use my si distributor.. im thiinkign zdyne.. but i dont have ANY $$ i had to sell cd's today to buy lunch
If yer flat broke, you can run the motor w/out the vtec for a while, I dont suggest it, but you can. Then you can use your stock SI intake manifold, dizzy, and ecu. You can run this setup for a short period of time until you can afford either the new ecu, or some sort of vtec controller.

if you go to the zdyne web site i think they have what distributers work with what head and what you have to do to modify your stock one to fit. if i was you i would just save the extra money and get the zdyne, i think its around $310

Screw Zdyne. They don't have the proper fuel/timing map for the Y8, they only have the Z6 tune... I've tried their stuff before, and went through 3 different tunes. All of them sucked compared to my setup right now. (PM6 ECU, V-AFC, adjustable FPR, tuned on a butt-dyno w/O2 sensor voltageguage)
Besides, V-AFC is better in the long run if you want to upgrade even more.
