do you guys here your vtec?
i ride on a 96 gsr and i dont hear my vtec, everything is bone stock....
i've heard that it engages at 4,400 rpms , but i've also heard that honda upped the vtec point to 5,700 rpm. is it audible w.o. any mods? cuz i can totally tell the difference on a prelude when it hits 5,500 rpm........and when do the secondaries hit? i've read too many inconsistant numbers.....

I have a stock 93 gsr and i can clearly hear my vtec cam kick in at 5700. hmm always thought on a b series vtec motor that it was 5700 for vtec. For a b18c with the secondaires i have heard it varies with throttle postion.for it being audiable when my friend installed a aem on his 96 gsr seemed like it got even louder at 5700 hmm
I can't really hear it in my stock GS-R. It does get noticeably louder when the intake opens up ~5700 rpm. Many people confuse that for VTEC.

In a stock gsr, if you pay close attention, you will vaguely hear it engage at 4400rpm. Other than that you cannot miss the secondary intake runners open up at 5700rpm, this sound should be very noticeable.

i can always hear it, cause theres this wierd clicking noise when the secondaries open...then it pulls harder! the first one i barely hear it...but if you have a loud exhaust its gonna be hard to pick it up...
I don't know much about hearing it as much as an actual push to the car when i get pass the vtec zone. It kicks ****... and don't you just love that high-revving sound the car makes?
I have an AEM CAI setup in my ITR and I can hear every single particle of air rushing into the intake manifold when the larger lobes engages...
CRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZYYYYYYYYY....LOU D!
sweet sound

I second that vtec thing.. 4500 for vtec crossover and 5700 for IAB opening up.
Unless you have perfect hearing you won't hear it switch over... and then there's the exhaust noise, intake noise, turbo, wastegate, stereo, girlfriend screaming, and the domestic i'm racing.... hear vtec?? shaaaa, i don't think so...
just the girlfreind screaming is enough to drown out ANY sound!!

jeez louise! no wonder you're confused - look at the answers you're getting here!!
stock GSR
big ed had it right.
look in your helms everybody (who has one).
IAB solenoid: 5750 (secondary butterflies/intake runners/whatever)
VTEC x-over: 4400
remember your tach (and especially your 5" monster tach) is not 100% accurate
i can audibly hear a change in engine noise at 4400, but i have ITR cams.
you should hear secondaries open up, even with stock intake.

4400 = the intake butterfly opens up
5700 = VTEC engages
these are specs for GSR's
On a stock GSR motor you probably wont hear the VTEC engage.

4400 higher lift lobes of the cam are engaged, sometimes you can hear an audible click, but that is all you will notice audibly.
at about 5700 rpm (only on GSR) the shorter intake runner paths will open.
you cannot hear any mechanical things happening, but when the butterflies open, it is best described out of one of the first issues of SCC I ever read, regarding the GSR, it sounds like two bikes racing through a canyon at WOT.
the ITR does not have the secondary intake runners, they have short, and thus less low end torque intake runners.

To reiterate, cams switch to larger lobes at 4400 rpm, and secondaries open up at 5750 rpm.
With I/H/E and 64 mm TB I could "hear" VTEC back when I had GSR manifold and stock VTEC X-OVER... Now my VTEC XOVER is at 6800 rpm, hehe.

i can hear it just fine..... but then again i have a b16a..........

with my old setup... jun cams and blah blah blah..... HELL YEA i can hear it.... make u go deaf..........

okay, thanks a lot guys, that helped me out a bunch, i thought there was something wrong with my car....i'll take the car out for a run again 2nite just to make sure, thanks again
I always questioned my VTEC engagement. Make a VTEC light so at least you know that all the prerequisites have been met for it to happen (oil pressure, TPS sensor output, RPM, etc.) Then the only thing that could be wrong is the actual mechanical acpect of it which you'd probably hear.
It makes me feel better to see it light up.

regardless of what it is you're actually hearing...
at 5,700rpm... you should definitely hear something...
on my stock 2001 GS-R, the car gives a mild 4 cyl. growl up to 5,700rpm, after that, it sounds very pissed off. This change-over is especially noticeable with your windows down, and to the people around you.
My stock Michelins also get upset, and chirp their displeasure most times... not much of a chirp, but it's there.

how come on a gsr u don't feel the push as u would feel in a prelude???

Mods determine how much you will hear the VTEC crossover. My mods for example, you'll be able to hear it if you try to hear it. If you have a car with a loud exhaust such as an N1, you'll definitely hear the crossover point. My observation was found to be correct while riding in a GS-R with CAI, header, and N1 exhaust. I could definitely hear the VTEC crossover...while controlling throttle between 4000 and 5000 RPM.
