Default So...Skunk2 Coilovers don't fit over Bilstein shocks. Nice to know that NOW!!!

Yeah, so I picked up some Skunk2 coilovers to firm things up compared to my Neuspeed sports. I did the rears first, and I was putting the sleeve onto the shock, and discovered *IT WON'T FIT!!!* YAY! So the outside circumference of the Bilstein shocks must be too large for the skunk2 threaded sleeves to fit over?

There was nothing between the two items - it was threaded sleeve on shock body - no washer, o-ring, tape, nothing - it just didn't fit.

Anybody have relevant experience that they can share?

I've got those accord front bilsteins, with the Skunk2 coil-overs and they fit perfectly! I used the smallest O-ring that was supplied, and they were supa snug.

Did they fit on the fronts? I have Skunk2's with Bistein HD's and they fit just fine on my 88 crx.

Didn't try the fronts - didn't have time. They are Bilstein HD's, the part #'s match up from what I can tell, and the circumference of the shock body is 6 1/4" measured with my mom's sewing tape - if anybody has access to measure the circumference of ANY OTHER TYPE OF SHOCKS, I'd really appreciate it for comparison purposes.

Regarding the fronts - I remember putting them on, the front fork where it has that pinch bolt - that part was a BITCH to get over the shock body. I had to use a screwdriver to spread it apart and push the shock up into it.

I remember thinking that it was weird at the time, but now I think about it, and it seems like something is screwy...

Now it seems like I gotta get some dimensions of other shocks and find out what the HELL is going on.

GREAT!

Did you have to use the o-rings at all, or did you have to use a mallet to pound the sleeve over the shock body?

I called the shop I got the Skunk2's from and they called Skunk2, and called me back, saying something about a large metal washer that sits on top of the shock body that needs trimming before they'll fit. Has anybody else heard this? I don't HAVE a large metal washer that sits on top of the shock body that is any larger in circumference than the shock body, so I don't know what they're talking about.

Thanks for the help guys!!

not sure about crx parts but my Vspec coilovers did not fit over my bilsteins(integra). the metal sleeve part was smaller that the body of the shock. I ended up gettin some nice ground controls that were made specially for bilstens.

Yeah, I used those rubber o-rings that were supplied and out them in the Bilstein shock and put the sleeve over it. Then I just slipped the sleeve onto that aluminum piece supplied by Bilstein and that's pretty much it. No hammering or banging required.

I have never heard of that washer issue, when you ordered your Skunk2's did you order them for a CRX?

Yup, shore did. Double checked the part #'s and everything. Two springs at 400lb, and two at 300lb.

Maybe the Accord shocks are smaller circumference-wise than the CRX shocks? I have no friggin' clue.

Not responding to anything here, just a tangent...I really bought these coilovers because they're the rates I wanted, good construction from a reputable company, I got them pretty cheap, and I didn't want to shell out $340 for GC's with Bilstein adapters when I barely drive the car as it is....

Yeah and I can't get any answers either. Skunk2 doesn't know, the place I bought the shocks (shox.com, a local shop) doesn't seem to want to measure any of their shocks, there's no email addy for Bilstein, and NOBODY'S GIVING ME NEW STUFF FOR FREE! Oh, wait...that wasn't supposed to be in there.

It looks like I'm either selling my brand new, un-used, in-the-box Skunk2's for a loss, or I'm stuck buying new shocks...cause the stuff I have does NOT work together.

Bilstein has an office in your area, I went there with the guys from Team SDX on a big CRX meet about 2 years ago on a cruise to "Julian" and then to the Bistein factory. Let me look for their info when I get home and I'll get back to you.

well this kinda sucks.

i was just about to go buy some new shocks. blisteins, but if there not gonna fit under my coilovers then that would defeat the whole purpose. oh well im gonna buy them anyway . i know they have worked for a lot of people, hopefully i will be one of them :keep fingers crossed:.

Yeah, they have their local (to me) phone number on their website...so I'm going to call them tomorrow. I don't think I'm going to get anything solved that way though, since I'm still stuck with what I have and I don't think anyone will be replacing anything...but we shall see!!
