Default replacement crank advice

After I spun the bearing, I also rooted the crank. Considering I am going for a FI build up now, can I get a stronger aftermarket crank? or is it a waste of money, and I should try to source a second hand OEM one?

pretty much a waste. Honda cranks are damn good from the factory. One thing you can do is get an OEM, get it balanced and all that fun stuff, and maybe give it a deep freeze treatment if you're really concerned with strength.

just concerned cause like I said I have already killed one... and that wasn't even on boost!
I have heard that you can get an aftermarket one with holes drilled to all for better oil flow... or something. Think I saw it on the Crower site.
I figure that that would be good for the big end bearings... especially since I blew mine already. What do you think?

And Honda OEM cranks have a special coating on them or something don't they? Doesn't that mean they can't be reground or balanced?

I went through the same thing. To make sure everything was up to spec I got a new one. Not aftermarket, just new.

I think you should just watch your oil level and pressures, and you'll be fine.

OEM =

(If it's good enough for 700hp+, then I'm thinking it's good enough for you.)

Even most "race" honda's use Stock cranks... like spoon. They use stock cranks, bearings, and valves. They just balance them down to something like .1 grams.

how much did the new crank cost?
is it alright to get a second hand one do you think? or just play it safe and balance a new one?

Just got a price from Crower for a H23a Billet. $2400 and 14 week wait.
Somehow I think that is going to be a bit of overkill!
So how much were the OEM ones again?!?

Got mine for new for 530, but I work there
Honda ones come balanced themselves, but good idea to rebalance with all the other parts.
2nd hand will be cheaper, but you don't know what shape it's in. Spun bearing damage you can see, but if it's bent you may have no idea and they may have no idea. Only a machine shop can tell you that.

thanks 19924ws, thats handy advice. The machine shop offered to try and source me a second hand crank, so they will probably be able to find one in pretty good condition. Does Honda still make new cranks for the H23a?

Yes, if it was a reworked one they would have to tell you. It was brand new!! Even came with a new crank pulley bolt and washer and crank seal oil deflector. Honda put 2 different cranks in the H23, one had a big dia bolt and the other had a small dia bolt. My new one is bigger.

Yes crank pulley bolt. Not sure on the dia cuz it's in the car. At first I didn't see the new bolt in the box and tried to put my old one in and it just slid in and out with no resistance. Didn't catch any threds.
