Is this 85 CRX worth $1,000
Ok, I really want this car, but the millege is a real killer, it has 180,000+ miles. Now I dont know if thats low or high for a 85 Honda. Also the guy that is selling it says its in pretty good shape, it starts up every morning. It needs some work which I am planning on doing if I get it. So is it worth $1,000? I test drove it and it runs fine, but the millege is what im worried about. It probably is worth it, but Im just making sure. Thanks!
PS: Also how is the body kit availibilty on a 85 CRX?

Is it an Si? If it is, DEFINATELY get it... and yes the mileage is kinda high, but if it's clean and runs well... why not? It'd make a good beater at the very least. If you're gonna keep the stock engine, check stuff like the condition of the oil, coolant, see if it smokes, etc... also push the car up and down to see how good the shocks are, and wiggle the front tires to see if any suspension components are worn... just inspect it inside out, find stuff wrong with it, and see what kind money you can save by offering him less. Definately see what kind of shape the car is in before you buy it. If you don't know how, get a qualified mechanic to check it out. Most do it for relatively cheap.
Yes it is a SI. Actually the guy that is selling it works at a place called Speed Tech. They supe up cars and all that stuff. Im planning on doing a engine swap when I get the money. Its somewhat clean, the dude is a smoker but I didnt smell any when I test drove it, the engine itself isnt that clean but im sure i can clean that. So is it still worth it?

Well, as long as you're happy with the body and you don't care about the stock engine/transmission go for it. You'll likely swap out that tranny anyways. I believe the 85 Si is the absolute lightest USDM Si ever made, so it's a great choice for an engine swap... it's just more difficult to do one (the Si is fuel injected... right???).

No way dude. I bought my 91 hf with 130k miles for 300 bucks. It runs and everything. Also i just bought an 88 Si for 250 but it had a blown head gasket. You're getting ripped man.

I had an '85 DX I got for $700 when I was 16.
That car was so much fun!
Make sure the body's in decent shape, especially the fenders. They are plastic and tend to crack, replacements are a bitch to find.

I happen to have an engine, trans, sunroof, wiring harness, ecu, guage cluster and a **** ton of other parts out of an 85 Si (w/ 12?K), im or email me (krustindumm@yahoo.com).
Check the rear suspensoin out. Especially the panhard rod mounts. The reason I have so many parts is a rusted out panhard rod mount.
Also check:
all jack points
front floorpan corners
rear floor pan corners (behind seats)
spare tire well
If that stuff checks out, jump on it! 1Gs are sweet (my old S/N here was "Autocratic_1st_Gen").

Well if it needs a liitle work like you said and 5th gear is out on the tranny , there's a little negotiating room there. I'd offer 600-700. 1000 is a little high, even for an Si.
The car is not worth 1000$. I got my 86 si for half that. If it really is an 85 it is lighter than the 86-87's. If its not an si don't bother. Cant do much with the carb'd ones. If you want a body kit any 1st gen crx is a poor choice. There might be 1 or 2 ugly ones out there, and the mugen kit which is extremely rare. Take a look under the car. I used to have another 86 crx i used for parts and it was drivable but the car was so rusted the jack points were gone. There was no where to jack up the car because it was so rusted, wherever I placed the jack would crumble. These cars do run forever but you will want more power, and its not worth swapping a motor into a rotting car. Plus to do a b-series swap you will need 600$ mounts just to get in engine in the car.
Here is something to think about:
The parts car i bought costed 100$. It started up every time but it needed a headgasket, and it had the horrible rust. I swapped a few fenders, the seat, and the center console with my car, and then i sold it for 50$. It had 150k and still ran when i sold it. Do you think its worth it to spend 20 times that on a older crx with more miles?

Consumer Rated Condition: Fair
"Fair" condition means that the vehicle probably has some mechanical or cosmetic defects, but is still in safe running condition. The value of cars in this category may vary widely. A clean title history. Even after significant reconditioning this vehicle may not qualify for the Blue Book Suggested Retail value.

If the car is rusty on the under side then stay FAR away. If its clean then pick it up and keep it outa the salt int he winter if it snows where you are.
