Explosion of axle grease?
Hey...
Went to change my oil this morning when I noticed this:

Looks like a bunch of grease from the axle, specially since it is on the areas all around it. My question is this: What would cause this? And, is it anything I need to worry about? Car seems to be running fine... didn't even know it had happened until I went down there.

yup............probably a tear in the boot or the clamp is a little loose and letting the grease out. nothing to worry about just have it fixed........
yeah,,thats prob what it is CV boot
just happened to my 94 DX hatch,,crap was all over my rim,,and the side of my car
so monday im getting a new boot
dont let it go to long before u replace it
or else u may get alot of dirt and crap in the boot,,which may ruin the axel,,
and then u wil have to get a new axel

I haven't washed the undercarrage lately, but I know this happened recently. I just put in the new clutch/flywheel last weekend and surely would have seen it then. It is rather milky too... axle grease is normally thicker, while this was easy to smear off.
I have some more pictures of it at http://www.milltek.com/grease/. I don't think it is a torn CV, since that was my first guess and I didn't notice anything wrong with it. I'll look at it closer. It could definitely be a clamp. Might have moved/loosened one by accident when we had the axle out. Not sure what that hose is either. I'll see where it leads and check its fluid level.
Thanks.

If you look at the picture it appears the clamp has loosened and allowed the cv boot to slide off a little. This is evident in the left side of the cv boot.

Reid is rite if you look closely it looks as if your clamp is loose allowing some of the grease to leak through it doesn't seem like your CV boot riped cause it looks fine, just tighten the clamp and inspect for any rips cause i had to replace my inner and outer CV boot and it was a pain......
The clamp seems to be pretty secure. How do you normally tighten them? I tried to, but it didn't seem to move at all. It seems pretty tight.
I did do a smell/taste test. No smell and no taste.
It just sort of sits on your tongue, not registering anything other than weight. That sound like axle grease?
One idea... I did hop the wheels pretty bad like a day or two ago... still not used to the new clutch yet... engaged with not enough throttle and it bounced around. Maybe that popped some out?

We probably upset/ripped it when we did the clutch
You sure there are no rips?
You can get a new one for like $60 at kragen/autozone if you bring the core back. My driver side axle is doing the EXACT same thing!

Its axle grease for sure. I got a Prelude axle from japan, and it had the thin milky grease in it as well. I know for sure because i had to switch the hubs for a H22A into a civic swap.
I was kinda suprised at first because usually the grease is much thicker and black. Just get it reclamped, or put a new boot on and your set.

looks like axle grease to me.
I just noticed yesterday at the track with my new 92 hatch that the cv boot to axle had NO clip so the grease was spewed all over the rim and such, very similar to your pic. th ecolor is a perfect match between your pic and my scenario. I repacked the axle and boot and put a new clamp on it ($4.00 later all done, good as new) no worries.
mos def axle grease from your cv boot ripping/tearing/loose clamp.
HTH. and fix that asap.

I would agree with most of the others and say its a crakced CV boot. I had the exact same problem on my ZC Civic last week. The boot was torn just about in half at one of the inner ribbs. It was tough to see until I rotated the wheel and then say the tear.
Fix is ASAP and all will be fine. Replacing the axle will be the easiest fix...
Also, you probably tore the boot slightly putting it back into the tranny. That is what cause my boot to rip.
