Ok guys, I have my '90 Suzuka Blue JDM Frontended, hatchy back from thwe body shop. Well I originally planned on doing a B20VTEC allmotor, in it. Well I did an MPFI swap on it and it actually has some pep now. By all means it is not fast, but peppy it is. I have a D16a6 that needs a rebuild, and an HF exhaust manifold. I was thinking of rebuilding the D16 and doing a T25 mitsu turbo and just running low boost 10-12 PSI max, and having fun with it. I figure it would be a good boost experiment. My CRX is getting a B20vtec turbo so lets's not hear any of those comments.
have you had a chance to drive either? Both will have **** tons of torque, and both will have that sweet torque bump in the middle of the rev range. I have heard that the CR-VTEC can be unreliable if the builder isn't careful-but the same goes for a turbo anything.
My opinion: Stick w/ the SOHC. Spend (at least) as much $$ as you would have on the CR-VTEC on the D16A6. Find a spare one and build it up outside the car. B16 rods/supra pistons are only about $450 and will add tons of safety, a metal headgasket, and replace every gasket on the motor. Use either a standalone (like ghettodyne or z-dyne) or the AFC/SMC hack with big injectors. Stay away from the FMU.
my est. price list
CR-VTEC:
V-AFC-$300
Block-$400
Mounts-$300
Linkage-$150
Head-$400
Misc.-$250
Total-$1600 MINIMUM, but you know that.
D16A6
Pistons/Rods-$450
SAFC-$250
DSM injectors-$100
RevHard kit-$2700
haf rad-$150
total-$3650, but could be done much cheaper
IMO the Hf mani sucks. The turbo would be good for 300hp, IDK about the CR-VTEC. If my prices are off, forgive me, I wrote this fast.

Man I had a SOHC ZC in my CRX running 8psi and its was a fun car to drive while spooling up and it would pull super hard but for a daily driver the lag and things I hated it I swapped it out for a built DOHC ZC so go with the CRVTEC.
I would do the sohc:
Easier... B20/VTECS are difficult to build right, IMO. D16 turbos are easy to do.
More available. Compare trying to find a B20 block to a D series block, or a VTEC head compared to a sohc, or anything for that matter.
Just plain cooler... fast sohcs are more respectable than quick DOHC's... and without some good tuning I have no doubt that the sohc turbo would be the better engine, power wise.

Anybody else? I was planning for this to be my fun daily driver auto-x car. I don't want anything stupid fast just a fun driver. Low 14's or high 13's is all I'm looking for. I just want it to be cheap so I can spend the money on my CRX. But it must be done right. So both motors will be rebuilt, and recieve JE forged pistons, and Eagle Rods. If I do do the D16A6 I will use the HF manifold, I'm not looking for a powerhouse just more power than what I have now. 180-200whp is acceptable.
forget the crvtec...just go for the sleeved b18c. instant 2.0 liter, and if you ever decide to turbo it, most sleeves are guaranteed up to 30 psi
