Break in period of a new EP3??
I just bought a new EP3 about 3 weeks ago i was just wondering from other owners on how they treated their car during the break in period and the do's and dont's i read the manual it said 600 miles no hard breaking no hard acceleration.

Honda engines can take abuse because i have an integra and i used to drive it hard... but i dont know much about the new engines.
soo far im lovin it

the break-in period i've always used:
very easy for 200 miles and not keeping a constant engine speed, change oil
still taking it easy until 500 miles and change oil
take it higher in the range and maybe get into vtec to 1000 miles and change oil
and after that you can do what you want and change the oil every 3k miles
its important to let the seals seat properly and to flush any and all possible metal shavings out. i don't think honda does this at the factory as well as mercedes. we changed all 10 qts at 500 miles on the E and it was golden. the CR-V(with k-series) was a different story, had some metal shavings in it at 200 and 500 miles. same with my buddies Z06.
also, used the same method with the 90 integra and it is running very well, doesn't burn oil like many older b18a's tend to do.

Many people have different takes on what the proper break in period is, but I usually keep the revs down (after the initial ring seating pulls) till 700 miles. The ring seating pulls are pulls up to 50mph with fairly high revving, and then letting the gears slow you back down. Repeat about three times. Then after the first 100 miles, change your oil and filter. Make sure you use Standard Grade oil.

As long as you dont really run the ***** out of it for the first few hundred miles you will probably be alright... I have heard so many different theories on what has worked and still works since they have broken their car in from just going through a tank of gas, going 800 miles, not taking it easy at all, etc.
i never said i knew more than honda on break-in. its just something that i have, along with my father, done with many vehicles. from honda to mercedes. its something he started when he bought his first car, a 1968 olds 442 w-30. things get to be a habit, its not hurting anything. it may be more expensive, but hell, the first benz we had...a 1988 300e went 402xxx miles before we traded it in. never consumed a drop of oil. neither have any of our hondas, thus far.

That'll tend to wear in the motor quickly.
You might get a dyno chart at 5,000 miles that most of us wouldn't get until 15,000 miles. The down side is that your motor won't last as long. This assumes you're after keeping the car for 150,000 miles, of course.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I'm also boosted now and will be replacing the internals eventually anyway so it's really no concern of mine.

the reason is to make sure all the small shavings are flushed out completely from the system. thats about it. we found some shavings in the cr-v, which has a k-series motor, not the older b-series.
is the oil they use specially formulated to help with seating the rings?

Your actualy supposed to leave the breakin oil for 5000 miles because it has an additive that changes the PH of the oil to help remove the very engine burs that your attempting to changing it 3x before 1000 miles. Redline motor oil has a PH that is very close to this as well.
