How much do you usually need to put down so you dont need to get insurance?
Im looking to get a bike soon once I sell my teg, gotta pay some CC bills off as well, so I want to put like 5k down on a new bike, people have told me if I put more than half down that they will not require you to get insurance, this true? Im 19 and full coverage on a bike for me is unaffordable.
Are these "people" also owners of motorcycles? Were they able to ride off the dealer lots with a new bike without insurance? If so, please don't ride with them. They don't seem to possess a lot of common sense.
I'm assuming you're financing the rest, either through your own bank or the dealership, after paying $5000. Either party involved will not let you ride off the lot without insurance. If they let you do that, then they're idiots. If you do it, you risk invoking Murphy's Law. If full coverage on a new bike is unaffordable, then get an old bike with affordale insurance coverage. And some gear (did you factor in helmetes/gloves/jackets/pants?).

3 of my friends all have bikes and said they did the same thing. I just want to know if thats true, not if you think its dumb or not. thanks
some dealers will finance you through a "credit" card and actually put the whole bike on a CC. when you do this you just bought the bike and they sometimes even give you the title so you dont need full coverage.
if you wreck the bike, then you're stuck with a $10k credit card bill. for a pile of junk. do you have any idea how badly that would suck?

Eric, It matters the Lender. Some will not require insurance at a certain amount and some do (Some lenders may want insurance at $7,500 and up, some at $10,000 and up).
I hope that answered your question. And in FL, you do not need insurance on bike IF you wear a Helmet.

I was quoted at $5k a year for full. In two years, I could have brought a new bike with that money.
BTW 19, clean record.

all i can say its SHOP AROUND.
i was quoted 5200/yr thru progressive, haggled my way down to 1750 a year with allstate, and found a mom and pop insurance place in a small town outside of dallas for 650/yr full coverage.
then they asked for some proof of my riding experience, so i sent them my MSF class certificate card thingy, and they mailed me a check for $20 crediting me and lowered my rates some more.
perhaps i was hella lucky or something. i dunno. very clean record.

In that case, yes, it's true. (but I guess the other posts already answered that)
Do your friends ride with insurance now?

If anyone has a lien hold on it they're gonna want you to have full coverage. Its just a good idea. Shop around. Since youre not going to have a car on the coverage too it means that its your only trasportation so coverage is going to be high. Especially high since your a male teenager.
Bikes are like cars, you at least need liability. In NJ, to register your bike you need insurance (no register, no tags). Also, when you get pulled over the cops ask you for your lisence registration and insurance. No insurance means TICKET... hope you see my point.

So if I follow this logic, I don't need insurance on my car if I wear my seatbelt?
Do you mind telling me where you got this bit of information from guy?

To not have insurance is just stupid, no matter what state you are in... if you crash into someone's car, house, kid, etc... you're gonna be paying way more than the $10k you just spent on the bike... and lets hope it doesnt' get stolen or you go down

Well why don't you pay for their insurance

Why don't you buy my bike for me???? I'll pay my own insurance.
Yes, not being a RESPONSIBLE RIDER makes you and anyone else out there a SQUID

your best bet, since its your first bike, would be to drop 3,500 on a used F4 or something, and then 500 on riding gear, and stick the rest in the bank, because liability will run you about 1200-2000 a year, (at least it is for me). no need for full coverage because if you really wack a car, you probably wont be around to have to worry about it
